Default Ive killed my Mondeo engine, but whats happened?

Going down M5, about 90mph, strange screeching noise appeared, not loud, dbit like a screeching belt, or something rubbing a bit, seemed quite minor, changed in note with throttle position more than revs.

After a few secs car started losing power, first i thought it was the aircon as it lost power in the same way, but then kept losing power.

No knocking or rattling or nowt you could hear.

Water temp was fine, oil pressure light wasnt on.

Looked in rear view mirror and thought i could see dispersing blue (ie oil) smoke, but not sure.

Car kept losing power and slowing, got another mile till it got to sub 30mph, so pulled up and car immediatley stalled, no oil light once, till it stopped.

Popped bonnet n steam/smoke was coming from head, seemed more like smoke, and certainly smelt like burning oil.

Head was super mega hot, littlest touch gave me a blister. Finally got oil cap off and head seemed dry.

Checked oil on dipstick and was at maximum, as ever.

Water was pretty much fine too.

Head was that hot it was still too hot to touch 2 hours later.

Turning engine over sounds fine, but seems easy, so maybe no compression either.

So whats up? Its not lost oil, there no mega rattles or knocks and the oil light didnt come on, so would that be dead oil pump?
But if wasnt that, why would head be dry?

Engines totally fucked tho I guess

Spose best find a s/h one to put in. Easy engine swap?

hmm, im thinking maybe blocked oil way(s) to head?

if their was no oil pressure in the bottom end the oil light would come on, unless it's fucked? so oil pump sounds ok, screeching noise maybe cams cos they were dry?

at a guess

for the price of the engines it would be cheaper to replace than trying to find out the problem and fix the problem tbh

but doesnt sound good anyhow

Steve, I would suspect that the aux drive belt has snapped or glazed over badly.

This grooved poly-V belt drives the power steering pump and water pump, and either of those could have siezed initially causing the screeching noise. If you had low power steering fluid, or a sudden loss of all the power steering fluid it may well cause the problem described.

Remove the top part of the black plastic cambelt cover to check the aux drive belt.

i think you'll be a bit fooked off if you swap the engines and find out it's just a nackered power steering pump mate

if it's a knackered pump then it's going to be a lot easier to swap than the engine, unless its the water pump

How would that have caused the oil problem etc etc? Esp as it didnt really have a water problem?

I checked the belts you can just about see without taking the covers off, and they all intact still, but others, dunno yet.

I dont know............I'm just stabbing in the dark with a blunt stick

Three jobs for you tomorrow:

1. Check the power steering fluid level.

2. Do a full leak down test.

3. Post up more pics of Hanna.

the water pumps on the mondeo 2.0L's are prone to failure. they are plastic impellors and shear off, resulting in 1 cooked head and blown H/G between cyl 2 and 3

for it to screech tho, somehing has seased or cam has got jammed

my old cabby, the screw that hold the metal plate behind the cams came loose and jammed the zorst cam sproket

didnt make a noise but cut out and the cunt was turning over real easy as it had bent all 16 valves

scuse my typeing,, im pissed again

You have to really abuse a zetec to kill it...

Any zetec with sub-200k miles which sounds good will be ok.

Look for clean-ish oil and a recent filter too.

Post up the results when you find out why it lunched itself!!

Dont worry, i do!

But then again it has full ford service history.

Does deffo seem in my head that it was an oilway blockage to the head, as for the last week the top end has been a bit rattly, and never has before.

The head was bone dry in there, no oil in the head, and so hot it went a bit black and was still too hot to touch 2 hours later.

Water only very slightly boiled over after I stopped the engine.

So thats an oil prob, innit?

Well there shouldnt be much oil in the head...

Did you hear the tappets die? Without oil pressure there is no valve adjustment!!!

Not sure theres a problem with the oil at all...

At a couple of hundred degrees C the head should be too hot to touch and in this weather will take hours to cool off!

Head stinks like burnt oil too, and is remarkably clean.

No taps or rattles at all really, but a really wierd squeaky noise for 20secs before it died.

Turns over really fast now, so obv no compression.

I'd at least look at the belt and timing marks to see if they line up...
