If using a laptop with no serial port which usb to serial adaptor definately works properly?

My mate tried but there is a 1 second delay from when you press the pedal to when the data display changes on the laptop

 

depends entirely on the ECU software.

 

i'm not sure what ecu he wants it to work with so can anyone who has tried this tell me which adaptor works with which ecu

I think i need to ring him tomorrow and get some more exact details.

I'll report back tomorrow but i know his laptop runs win xp sp2 but he could downgrade to win 2000 if need be.

Just re-read your original message Sorry. Mis understood.

If the software isnt reporting comms errors then its the software itself
one wayt or another as Jim says.

XP does impose overheads on serial ports especially when using USB.
If the software hasnt got the latest fixes like that I used to do mine then
it could be that the software is allowing retrys and only if say 1 in 10
data packets is getting through correctly.
This wouldnt necessarily cause error messages to be reported and
shows itself up as a delay.

Really best call the software manufacturer as they are best suited to advise.

I will keep an eye in this for you no problem if I can help.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to look at something like that and give advice.

Best contact your supplier.

USB driven RS232 serial ports are very fussy. !

I personally prefer a true serial port (On the laptop itself or PCMCIA card)
as this presents least problems in all circumstances.

Wether or not this will work is TOTALLY depentant on the ecu software
manufacturer and their ability to use serial drivers in the XP windows
enviroment correctly.

Also, what may work ok for one person may refuse to work for another.
This is the problem of supposidly "compatiable" pc hardware on USB.
(I.E. In the real world, there is no such thing)

If its cheap enough, you may just have to buy and try !

I've tried a few. PCMCIA ones are spot on.

But.... The Innovate one available from graham goode has been very good.

I've used it to log multiple channels @ high frequency and there is no lag whatsoever

 

Rick, does the Innovate LM1 kit include a USB-Serial adapter?

Im gonna buy a LM1 so if thats the case I wont have waste money on this other one.

 

I use an Omron converter which is pretty instant. It's quite expensive though at about Ł115 IIRC.

 

Ive done some testing with this simple converter but so far it wont work with the Pectel Monitor.



Could it be that the driver only work 98/2000/XP and wont function properly in a command shell (Dos)? Or should it work anyway since the shell runs in XP?

Im currently digging out my old Pentium 90 laptop (It actually boots win 95 faster than xp does on my high spec workstation ) to test that the serial cable actually works.

I dont know if its branded, says Deltaco but thats only the swedish distributor for them.

If run the driver cd and click on drivers page i end up at www.titanelectronics.com , same?

 

Just ensure the adaptor you buy. Adds the device as a Seriel port which can be changed.
The belkin ones dont. SO you cannot change the Com Ports.

Ive been to change the com port and tested my old laptop that works fine with the pectel monitor connected directly to built in serial port.

However, I compared the settings for the proper serial port with the emulated one. The emulated port didnt have any flow control at all so im hoping it will work once ive set it to xon/xoff like the real serial port.

 

Didnt work at all, guess its due to USB wasnt around when DOS was constructed.

As I said above. It is RARELY the fault of the USB interface but more likely
the software that you are trying to use has not been programmed
using the proper methods to use serial ports within the windows
enviroment. I know this as when I developed by windows version
of the S8 ecu software, I had the same problems but learned how to do
it properly.

I advise you contact your software/product supplier and tell them.
It may get them to sort it for everyone. !

 

Thanks Simon, ive sent an email to Pectel asking them about windows software but I doubt there is one around since the monitor is such an old product.

I hope they atleast can supply info on what protocol its using for the serial communication so that I could try and make download program in visual basic.
