Hey peeps, finally found the right project car for me. I am now the proud owner of a 1988 Fiesta XR2, Red, 2 owners from new, excellent bodywork for its age (Just needs a new bonnet, a T-Cut and has a few scabs), Engine is sweet as a nut, Imaculate Interior, 10 months MOT. LOADS and LOADS of history, including all except one MOT and bills for everything!!!

My plan is to completely strip it, repairing any bodywork and blemishes, then to put an RS Turbo engine in running EFi and a megasquirt ECU, massive brakes, coilovers, a rollcage and some buckets

luv the xr2 turbos my self,my 1 was running mfi with 200bhp and stripped out tho,wanted 2 change it 2 efi!!!!!

 

I've only ever seen one running, and was MINT! I love the XR2's with 13" Capri 2.8i special alloys too, they look awsome!!!

Well, had a day off today so I started on the front end. Removed all excess rust, treated it with Hamerite Krust, filled and primed over.











All with the help of my trusty companion!


Hope to get the roof bubbles sorted in the next few days, going to try and get the new bonnet on the weekend and then sort the boot floor. After that it's on to the fun stuff!!!

Well, I had another day off today so I went to my local motor factors and ordered a new bonnet, I was quite chuffed as it only cost me Ł58 inc VAT! I also tackled the rust bubbles on the roof, and primed them over.

Well, I really want to, but ......... I'm scared it'll look crap when it goes back on, either that or bits'll fall off!!! It seems to be rivited on too. Has anyone taken an XR2 kit off and put it back on, if so how did you secure it??

looks like i need to get me arse in gear, and get mine done......... or make a start atleast,

i was runnin esc turbo mate, but its tight... battery in boot,
changin to efi when its back on the road...WHEN!!,
doesnt help when i find other quick projects to do, like the S1 estate where in the middle of.

New bonnet is also on now, just a few more rust scabs to sort, then its on with the engine!!!

Well, today I bit the bullet and ripped out the interior. I found a bit of the inevitable rust in the rear foot wells, drivers footwell and the seam, nothing to cry over, just poked away at it, and treated the good stuff to a coating of krust. Which leads me to the fact that I can now justify to the missus buying that MIG welder I always wanted!!!

Christ no, I've patched up far worse cars than this!! My dad had a MK4 a few years back and the holes were much bigger!!! Wasnt going to take the interior out first of all, glad I did now though, my mind wont be curious of what's under there now, I'll be happier knowing its done!

Yep, it really is now! After welding in those patches it's on to the engine bay, there's two holes to patch either side. Then it's off to the paint shop for the respray!

I've found and engine now, out of my mates S2, need to convert it to EFi before I fit it, but hey, when you're offered a Power Engineering 200+ bhp engine with 45k on it, you just have to buy it!

So while you've got that welder on the go you might as well get the front cross member modified

 

Exactly dude, then, while the welders still plugged in I'm gunna de-lock the doors too and modify the locking, dont want any p1keys bustin the locks or using a coat hanger in attempts to nick it.

 

Sounds like a good plan. don't forget to run a slave wiring from the battery to some secret location that you can gain access to just incase the battery goes flat.

 

I've had a few bargains in the last week. I've bought a head gasket and bolt set off of E-Bay for the when I remove the head, which came with all the gaskets on the head, plus head bolts and even valve stem oil seals - Ł15. Second one was my new welder, I bought a Clarke 90en dual purpose MIG welder for Ł130. Finally I bought a new battery tray plus bulk head section from my local motor factors - Ł11 next day. Bargain.

So today I set about removing the old battery tray, removing the surrounding paintwork and shaping my new tray. Not as easy as it seems, because the tray is spot welded on to some arms which are welded further down the bay. So in the end I cut away the tray, leaving the metal on the arms and ground it down a bit. Observing closer it seems someone has been here before, but obviously not done a good job. Finished article is a lovely snug fit!

Wow, I aint updated this in ages, time for an update (Sorry if its a bit long!)

Well, did a bit of pricing on my dream ideas of an RST engine and EFi etc, but I really couldn't afford it, so I opted for the "Soft" option instead. I'm now the proud owner of a set of Twin 40 DCNF's, and a Kent Cams CVH22 cam kit, a facet fuel pump, kent cams vernier pulley, and a few other bits and bobs all (Other than the twins) from Peter Lloyd Rallying down in Bridgend.

The engine bay is now immaculately clean, the block and head have been seperated, painted, de-coked, new gaskets everywhere and put back together.

While the head was off I fitted the cam kit, vernier pulley, and the twins. I also fitted the sender unit and T piece for the oil pressure gauge.

The rocker cover has also been customised and the 4 branch has been fitted!
