Default Help with rear beam mounting bushes....

I finally got round to starting to fit my poly bushes today..... anyway how difficult is it to remove the old rear beam mounting bushes and fit the new rear beam poly bushes? The rear beam has been dropped now on both sides - by removing the plates either side.

* Should I cut out the old bushes?
* Do the new powerflex poly bushes push up into place with relative ease or do the need to be pressed in?

You put a piece of wood between centre of a old bush and the car. You jack the rear beam untill old bush goes out. polybushed go in the same way.

One of simplest jobs. Be carefull with large bolts through the bush - it's easy to strip the thread in the bodyshell.

Thanks Azrael! I have already had problems with the bolts - I snapped the welds inside the chassis for the driverside plate (both small bolts) I think I will now have to have the new bolts inside the chassis and have the nuts on the outside. - any ideas???

Simon Day remove rear seat, cut holes directly over the bolt holes, put nuts with second nut for good lockintg in there and job done. I had it done in such way and ozcos who is bodyshell expert here says it's a right way to do it.

I started to re-assemble the rear beam tonight and by just jacking up the beam I can't seem to get the long bolt that goes through the bush to bite!!! - Is there a certain way I should be jacking it up????

Did you put them in right way round? :-/


Didn't have any problems on mine. You certainly culd getlonger bolts but that doesn't seem right.

Does this work with polybushes (the removal) ?

I have a spare beam fitted with polybushes which I would like to sandblast and powerder coat, but I can't powdercoat it with the bushes fitted.
Ideally, I need to remove the powerflex bushes without damaging them.

We've tried a press already, but all that does is spread the bush so that it sits even tighter in the beam

frog did you get rid of metal tube that goes into bush? POwerflex didn't seem very tight. Never tried to remove them though.

cut holes?
you just put a spanner into the hole in thesection where the captive nuts are and hold it there surely
unless you can't?
thats what i did when they snapped off in my mates car

as for getting them out, what you really need is a socket big enough to compress the outer bit of the lip of the bush as it comes out of the top and then push it through

dojj unfortunately on mine there weren't holes big enough to put a spanner through :-(

Yes I have had a problem with bolts not long enough before, not sure if it was on escort or sierra but just use a longer bolt ,But make sure it will tighten before the shoulder hits the treads.

use a meduim size socket and press to remove bushes if you want to re-use them as to small and they can tear and to big a socket will trap the bush against the sides and shear or tear it aswell.

The hole only needs to be cut in the floor if the single long bolt treads go and not the small ones as yes you can get access through the side holes.
Hole only needs to be big enough for a nut and socket. Then fit a rubber gromet.

Can't get the rear beam to fit the bloody sleeve's inside the bush will not refit into the section of the chassis I have tried jacking in various points with no luck.... also to get the mounting plates back on it seem the bush will not to be compressed quite alot! I is almost like the bush is upside-down - even though the the profile is the same as the original bush I removed.... any suggestions - I have added this basic pic.... & yes I know I am shit at MS paint!

Edited: Checked mine and the picture shows it's the right way round

Mind you, whichever way it goes, it won't help with the alignment problem

loosen the diff mount
this will help move it around a little, possibly enough for you to mvoe the beam into place and slot the bolt home

mine you, i did mine with lots of swearing the first time, the second time i had the whole beam out and put them big bolts in first

Sorted now! - but what a bloody pain in the arse.........

Found the best way to fit them was to insert the bush sleeve into the chassis first then jack up the bush. I also fitted the two long bolts with much thinner washers to get the thread to bite.
