Fitness Guru's.....Help?
Firstly can anyone tell me what's the average weight for my age / height? I'm sure that's how you 'roughly' work it out. - I'm 23, 6'2", Broad shoulderd and well built if that helps
So here's my story.....
I used to be overweight, (I know I still am but improved a fair bit) from the start of this year over the course of about 3 months I lost 3 stone. This was acheived easily I thought and not through vigorous excersize routines or going on a proper rabbit food binge, purely by cutting out a lot of the old crap I used to eat and drink! I was really pleased with the outcome and felt soooo much better for it! Also all the comments from people asking if I'd lost weight and how well I looked just spured me on even more!
So, to give you more of an idea:
1) I don't drink alcohol...very rarely! I'll probably have one or two pints a month possibly a tad more if there's a reason for it but me and the mrs don't really go out on the piss as much anymore so basically it's minimal.
2) I don't smoke, never have done.
3) I don't really excerize! (Only basic stuff at home, push ups, situp's and some weights) but again all minimal!
I know I lost the weight because I drink a fair amount of fizzy drinks, which I know was the big thing with the sugar and fat content, I'd probably drink about 2 / 3 pints a night when at home say.
Also, regular evening meals used to consist of chips....chips...and more general junk! so not good.
I know I lost the weight simply by cutting out the full fat fizzy drinks and switching to Diet (I still drink about the same amount) and ditching the chips and crap as much as possible, eating smaller amounts and eating a more healthy evening meal!

Looking at what you have written you already appear to know where you are going wrong. Your only downfall is implimenting the things you have said you want to do or changing the foods that you already know are bad.
A for tip on going to the gym? Go straight there from work and do NOT go home. I find that if I go home to the warm and TV, thats it, I am not getting off my lazy arse to go back out again. Give it a try, you may love it and get hooked but its not for everyone.

I just done a google search and found a body mass indicator thing, these were the results:
Your BMI is 26.4 - overweight
Your weight is substantially above the healthy range for your height, which means you have a higher than average risk of developing diseases associated with obesity.
Losing enough weight to bring your BMI to below 25 will benefit your health, and the way you look and feel.
You can lose weight by making sure the number of calories you eat each day is less than the number of calories you need to maintain your weight at its current level. This is best achieved by making changes to your eating habits so your diet is healthier, and starting to get some exercise which you can build up and maintain regularly.
The tools in Weight Loss Resources can help you make the necessary changes to your eating habits. You can set a weight loss goal, and see how many calories you need each day to get there. You can try it free for three days.
What is BMI?
BMI stands for body mass index which is a formula which relates body weight to height. This enables people to determine whether they are at a weight which is healthy for them.
What Your BMI Calculation Means
Under 18.5* Underweight
18.5* - 25 Healthy Weight
25 - 30 Overweight
30 - 40 Obese
Over 40 Severely obese

Regarding the gym, yes I can imagine going straight there would be a good idea leaving the lure of getting home to the warm and tv like you say - What's best for a gym beginner i.e how many times a week should I need to go, was thinking two or three initially because I imagine it'll be tough!

I am asuming you are going for cardio reasons so would think starting off at 2 times a week would be fine and build up to at least three after a few weeks as you get fitter. Its the same as anything, horses for coarses, whatever works for you and you will only find that out by yourself.
Personally I go 5 times a week, straight from work on a school night. For others this is too much, for me its not enough as I don't like doubling up body parts.
Out of interest did you have to measure the fat in certain body areas to complete the BMI as to do it accurately you should. At the end of the day, you seem sensible enough so should be able to judge yourself if you are overweight or not. I would get on one of those scales in Boots and it would tell me I had to loose weight, but the machine cannot see you or your build type.
