Default Can you lose weight and build muscle at the same time

As running round the streets and riding over the park etc etc has seemed to stop me losing weight now I have decided to join a gym.

I started mid last year at 19st 7 and got down to 15st 6.

I then damaged my left knee which stopped me running on the streets and therefore put a bit of weight back on.

On saturday i joined the gym and started running and doing weights, I feel really good (but sore in the arms)

Anyway I plan on going every day and doing 3 miles run to start off with and the 3 x12 reps of around 6-8 different machines.

My fitness test is tonight at 7.30 in the gym so I think a lot will be told then.

I am currently 16st 4.

My aim is to get to around 14st but for the first time in the last 10 years have a bigger chest than belly lol, Which is what leads me on to gaining muscle.

Should i do loads of cardio and get rid of the fat first or combine the two?

Should i use these maximuscle supplements?

Is there anything better?

Oh I am 6foot dead and have 34.5% body fat according to yesterdays test

Thanks Guys.

id say yes some will say no.

Is there anything better?

yes but illegal. poss f*ck u up in the long run

my best advice is to sit down with you gyn/ friend that's doing the same and set out a diet plan/eating plan

may take time but it will be worth it in the long run

What you need to do is get your diet 100%. Once you start taking in the right foods and the right amounts the weight shoudl come off, and providing you keep up the gym work your body fat % should go down.

http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html

keep adjusting your diet as you lose weight, when you are at the level you want start eating at maintenance calories and keep up the gym work.

went a bit like this.

Small Bowl Fruit and fibre as early as possible

only drank water

lunch was tesco layered prawn salad or chicken and bacon. Both Small portion ones, and a piece of fruit.

then dinner was chicken and veg, chicken and rice, chicken and pasta.... you get the idea.

anyway.

exercise was 3 mile jog/run monday wednesday saturday and sunday.

30 lengths swimming tuesday and thursday

friday gym with a friend 5 miles treadmill a few weights etc etc.

lost about 4-5 stone in 6 months maybe. stayed off too but damaged my knee which turned into me eating badly again which put me up in weight a bit.

Thankgod i have stopped eating bad again and exercising though, never wanna be 20 stone again..

i was 52 inch chest 44 inch waist 18.5 neck

now even after a small weight gain as of yesterday i am 44 inch chest 38 inch waist and 16.5 neck.

Yes you can build muscle whilst losing weight but not on the routine above and its harder to do than concentrating on one or the other.

Personally I would diet and do lots of cardio for a few months to get the bodyfat down to a better level and then think about doing weights for muscle building.

However, 3 x 12 reps on 8 machines is not going to build muscle beyond a point. You may well tone up and build a little but the gains will be short lived. Get a weight loss programme going on and then look into a bodybuilding one.
