One of my goals....come early.....and another milestone reached...
This probably doesnt sound alot to some people on here.....but I wanted to be lifting 36kg dumbells on the flat bench dumbell chest press by the end of the year - its like the start of the different looking weights if that makes sense in the gym....
.....well today....
...3 sets.....8 reps......36kg!!!!!
Well made up.......currently in my 6th month of training - not bad considering I think I started on summat like 14kgs! lol

Nice one. Sometimes people don't realise how strong they intitially are and if you go in with the right mindset to push yourself you find that you really make good progress. Sounds like your working hard Lee

I always did lower reps on my first exercise such as barbell press and then on say incline dumbbell press and dumbell flyes I'd try and keep the reps to 8 and above.
It's whatever you feel comfortable with. THe main thing is constant progress. YOu can try and progress too fast though and add too much weight to quickly and then spend months wondering why some weeks you can lift it and some you can't. I'm now finding 5 reps is a happy medium, but I used to go down to 2 or 3 reps. Never did many singles though for fear of injury.

Cheers Paul -
The dumbell chest press is the first exercise I do...and yeh I know what you mean about the big jumps.
I've just gone from 32kg to 36kg.....then it goes 40kgs & 45kgs......then I'll have to move gym as thats the biggest dumbell they have!! lol Set the 45kg as my new target for the end of the year!!!

Christian.....thanks mate. Form is good - the person I train with always makes sure of that & bollocks me if its not!!! lol Bit difficult to have bad form though on a flat bench press I'd imagine - apart from arching your back I suppose!!
Whereabouts are you from in the NW?

Im from Chester m8 i see you're from liverpool bet you've got some top gyms to choose from .
You sound like you've got a good training partner... d.bell press for chest is a fave of mine too. When (or when i *used* to ) go heavy your form obviously aint gone be the same as if you're lifting 10kgs, you're or should be struggling, but like you said no arching back no bouncing the weight off your chest and still going deep at the bottom of the movement and you're sorted. 36kgs is well above average imo you'll piss 45s well before the year is out.

Well....currently I'm at LA Fitness in Formby - its only 5mins up the road from where I live. I think theres alot more hardcore gyms the closer you get to the centre. Not sure where I'll join next to be honest - I'll probably see what size I am when I get to the 45kgs & re-assess it then. Might just decide to maintain it rather than go massively massive. lol
Yeh I dont bounce the weight off my chest...think I'd find that impossible tbh anyway!!! Thats easier to do on the proper bench press as I've done it a couple of times without even meaning to!!
Yeh the lad I train with is good - hes only 20yrs old but naturally big & tall - about 6ft 5 ish - 16 stone. But hes on 40kgs chest atm so I'm catching him. I'm only 12.2stone!!
Had a little competition on the Smith Machine squats today, proper ass down jobbies - we drew at 7 reps of 50kg each side plus the bar (which is only very light tbh).
Arms tomorrow!!!

I'm training at more fitness orientated gym at the moment as im just trying to cut up.... usually i train at more hardcore gyms which is great when you just wanna get bigger/stronger .
What you're lifting kg's wise is important obviously, dont get over concerned about it though (it doesnt seem like you are anyway). Bodybuilders bodybuild and powerlifters shift weight. The best physiques i've seen in the flesh (regional & national level competition), not all have been particularly strong or big i.e. lad in my previous gym was only 12.5 stone about 5'7 he looked only slightly 'stocky' in normal i.e. loose clothing but jesus he looked awesome, cut to shreds, brilliant proportions.
Strongest lad bench wise in same gym was Griff benched 200kgs(!) at about 17/18stone i think, looked very big but had no neck & no definition, not into that. I've benched 180 for a couple of reps about 18 month ago and pressed 66kgs dumbells (crap form on d.bells - not low enough - it felt very heavy though lol!!).

Andy - thanks mate
Radders - kiss my plums!!
Well.....after posting this this time last week I did wonder that it could just of been one of those good days training when you're really in the mood for it & seem to be able to lift alsorts....lol - fortunately I was able to replicate it tonight as well as sneaking in 4 reps of 40kgs (4th rep I was given a touch by my mate) inbetween the usual 3 sets of 8s on 36kgs!!! Very happy with myself!

LOL....cheers Dave - yeah I'm the same. Its worse that my mate who I train with is 6ft 5" so when I lift them up for him his arms are bastard long so I have to lift them higher - especially when hes doing shoulder presses & hes lifting 40kgs! I think I'm having a better work out than he is just by lifting the fookers up! LOL!

I was on a test the other day, and pushed 70kg in bench press with a bar, havent done any waights in over 5 years now, but could do 12 repetitions in a row.
You feel good after that
