Default I'm doing a 5 mile run for cancer research.... HELP!

As title I'm doing a 5 mile run for cancer research in April and just wanted some tips from any runners out there?

I keep fairly fit at the moment playing football twice a week + training, but I was hopeless at running at school depsite having a good build for it!

Not to worried about diet etc just a good routine in terms of milage targets etc and what sort of exercise i should be doing.

Cheers,
Dan

nutter

I can't comment on running training, Yamaha who's Stus sister is the best person to ask as she runs to egypt and back each week.

All I'll say is get yourself a decent pair of shoes and start training early. Watch out for joint related problems and shin splints but as you do football, which I believe involves running, you'll probably know if there might be any potential issues.

As you can tell I'm not hot on any cardio related exercise

I used to be well into running, was quite good a one point but i never really had to train that hard so did it for fun. When i got older the fun stopped so ive never done it since. Start off with a short run, a mile maybe and take it steady. Run this every 3 days and each time add a little distance. After a few months you wont even realise how far you can run. The first month is the hardest as you wont be arsed, as you get fitter you will want to do it more.

Cheers Adam, i'm sure I can manage a mile without too much trouble, its the other 4 that worry me. Like you say though i guess the key is to build the miles up slowly.

PS out of the 65 entrants, i'm only 1 of 12 blokes

Hi

I do quite a bit of running myself and from experience....

1) very important................ buy proper RUNNING shoes or you risk injury

2) start with a run walk program, run for 1 minute, walk for 2 minutes etc, gradually increasing running time and decreasing walking time until you can manage 15 mins or so of continuous running

3) build up to 3 x 20 mins week is a good start.

see here......................

Lots of programmes for you to follow, reviews on shoes, watches etc. Plus, forums!!

Good Luck

hi mate, you may want to look at including some high intensity interval training into your training, especially in the period 10 weeks before running. Hard to say how id apply this to this kind of distance but if you really want i hand I can help. I understand kinda what your going through as im doing something fitness related in the summer
