Swirl marks
Hi all,
Sorry it's not a ford but I would like some advice on my Bentley GT.
It's a dark car that unfortunately lives outside due to it being too big for my garage. Anyway I'm moving soon and there is a big double entry garage that it will live in.
I'll cut to the chase, basically last year a friend of mine gave the car a machine polish, he is a professional but only charged me £100 and spent the whole day on it. Now it looked great but after a couple of washes all the swirl marks were back.
Is there any way I can get these swirl marks gone? I have used all the black hole glazes and even bought a pro finishing product at the local paint suppliers but putting it on by hand doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
Please have a look at the pics and see what you think.

No exactly this is my point.
These swirl marks are a joke, I wash it normally and then polish etc and it hides some of them but on this occasion I haven't polished so I can show you guys what it's like and hopefully get some advice.
It does go to the local Bosnians on occasion (I know I shouldn't) but surely that wouldn't cause such bad swirls. Maybe I'll just book it in professionally with someone.

Probably just need to alter your wash technique a bit. I use cheapish products and get good results with a bit of care taken. I use a hose with snow foam from asda £10. a bucket with asdas finest car shampoo £7 and a new micro fibre wash mit £3 every couple of washes with seperate mit for wheels etc. The key is not to drag dirt across the surface of the finish so keep your bucket, mit and water clean. Maintain the finish with a wax. I am using meguires ultimate liquid wax £35. Goes on easy & buffs up lovely. Jobs a carrot. I am a complete amateur just my experience of what works for me after years of practice lol.
Edit : Never use a hand wash car place.. they will destroy your paint due to not having an effing clue

Reading the above, it looks like a lot of the damage has been caused by the hand car wash places. I have noticed with all of them that I have visited in the past, that they use one sponge to do a lot of the work and don't really care if the car is absolutely filthy and driven through a muddy field, they will continue to use that sponge for the next car etc...it doesnt matter how good the sponge/wash mitt/microfibre is, it will still carry all the dirt and grime. Your car comes in and BAM...straight onto your car!
My Mercedes was similar to what yours is...may have even been a lot worse! as though someone went at it with a brillo pad! After a few days wet sanding and polishing, I finally got the results I wanted from the paint! It looked like a different colour with how deep it turned and how much it popped in the sun!

There are sealants you can buy which help protect the paint for upto 2 years and help resist scratches from washing etc. G-Techniq C1 and ExoV2 is whats on all the above cars

Tbh alot of so called detailers' simply fill the swirls with product...so swirls ain't never really gone, plus it is ni on impossible not to get the odd swirls unless It lives in a dry hermetically sealed vault, removing swirls requires alot of knowledge on paint/laquer types, plus being sure of what you got too play with before you do it, depth,tools,products.....and that's before we go into wet flatting..
So id say A.. Get on detailing world, shit load of technical info on washing/maintaining/caring for your motors, and B plenty of guys on there round Essex who do this day in and out so will probs be only too happy too sort/advise on the best fix and or way to do it yaself and save a few bob
They ain't bad webs, just ain't something you wanna see on a motor like yours..
Oh and leave the Turkish baths alone unless its for heath or sexual reasons, as its £5 a wash for a reason

I'm sure your friend did an ok job but a full correction on a Bentley in a day just isn't going to happen. At best a bit of an enhancement (which is probably what you got) as it will take a good couple of days to get around a car this size.
Quick car washes serve the masses with a 'my car was honking but now it isn't' type service but usually technique and products will not be gently enough not to inflict swirls.
Best way for deciding which detailer to use is recommendations, can't really say more than that other than I'm not touting for work! As for pulling your pants down, I'd expect the car to be 3 days work so 3 x days wages, unit running costs, product and insurance to be taken in to account.

As above, you would go along way to preventing more swirls by NOT usingthe local polish hand carwash! ive never used one in my life, always washed all my cars myself.
I dont know your wash method and what you use but dont use a normal yellow sponge, they will just drag the dirt around and scratch the paint, use a wash mitt or a microfibre sponge with a deep pile, something like these http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washin.../prod_984.html.
A decent shampoo that has alot of lubricity to it, i use this one http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washin.../prod_144.html.
Dont use a leather or a blade to dry, use a drying towel, something like this http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washin...prod_1480.html.
Some people use two buckets aswell, one with your shampoo and one with plain water to rinse the sponge in before dunking it back into the shampoo bucket. You''ll find all the grit/dirt is in the bottom of the rinse bucket and not the wash one.

Thanks for the kind words everyone...
TBH, by the sounds of things, I agree with the others that it simply won't be done in a day unless you had a team of people working on the car...and by the costing, it was an enhancement detail rather than a correction detail.
Im not sure why people bother with fillers, as, like you have experienced, they don't last long at all!
IMHO, what you would need is;
Wash
Clay
Wash
Paint correction - something like Menzerna, Megs, Gtechniq (usually my choice of weapon)
Seal - Something like Gtechniq C1, Gtechniq Exov2 (optional), Fusso wax or if you wanted to be REALLY extra, you could use C1, and Exov2, then Fusso....the results are JAW dropping!
While your at it, seal the wheels up to!
I have a MG I'm working on at the moment which is getting the full audio treatment (iPad in the dash, boot build, door builds etc), some body work (front bumper repair and painting), and then getting a full detail inside and out...it has paint like your which is swirly at the moment...im sure I can sort that out...he was considering me detailing it before the audio work and I was like hell no, not with the saw dust that will be sitting on the car after lol!

Aslong as its on Original paint, its double lacquered... So there should be plenty of meat on it for full paint correction...
You'll just need to change your washing technique then...

You'll be glad you did and he'll give you all the one to one advice you'll ever need for keeping it looking A1
If you search Google or YouTube for Heavenly Detail there will be loads on him. There's bound to be a dark GT amongst the cars there somewhere.

To be honest a decent Detailer will charge around £500 to do a proper job on a Bentley. You get what you pay for and a £100 job will be no where in the same league

2 - 3M extra fine yellow polish ( yellow top ) with yellow pad
3 - 3M ultrafina se polish ( blue top) with blue pad
the results will be amazing and your car will look as new but the job
will take you a couple of days to get the best finish that your after here are a few

Fao bassboy, the carpro C1 and exov2 come in 30ml bottles, i take it they will do a whole car with 1 bottle? I have a focus estate.
Also where do you buy fusso wax from?
My car is panther black and the wifes cmax is sea grey so would be good to use on both.

Agree with all the above but need to include a Snow Foam pre-wash to remove the dirt or else you are just pushing grit across the car with a sponge.

I wouldn't bother with a sponge or 2 bucket method ..I've been doing this for a few months now and works 10 times better ..I have 10 mitts on standby but only ever use 4-5 on a complete wash ..Jap mitts are awesome ..watch this video the guys makes total sense .

I'm Finding My Feet Here Now
right..if your going to do it yourself..make sure you have a very good bright light to inspect your paint work as you work on it..because i was gutted! Basically i washed,dried the car..then i clay barred the whole car twice..i then taped up the edges..used a DA polisher with some cutting compound to remove swirls..gave all the panels about 2 passes ..then i wiped down and used a finishing pad with poorboys glaze.The car looked amazing..as i thought i removed all the swirls..but i didnt..i was using the wrong pad for cutting..so it didnt remove much swirls..and then when i used the poor boys all it did was fill them in and hide them.. any way this took me nearly 20 hours ..car looked amazing..heres some pics...
any way..after taking it out a few times in the sun and after a few washes//..i realised the swirls were still there.. was gutted! so took the car to a pro detailer..he put a proper light to it..and seen this!!!!!!!!
He then explained what i did wrong ....after just 5 mins with the right pad and compound it looked like this..
heres a before and after
so now i am going to start all over again and this time remove all the swirls on the car... polish..wax and then seal it..will take me atleast 30 hours ..its hard getting a dark colour swirl free..but i will do it no matter what now as it pisses me off seeing them.. thanks..mo

30 hours... blimey, you'd be no good at my place of work
Were currently using our A3 again as a daily... we've owned it for 11/12 years now
Dark colours are easy enough to work with and very rewarding if you know what your doing
