Can't play DVD's...
Just in case any of you might be able to help/have any idea's...
This new PC only has a DVD-ROM drive (at the mo, DVD burner coming soon) but for some reason it will not let me view DVD's. If I stick one in (don't matter which, does the same with all including copied ones and proper genuine ones) it goes to the pop up window of what programme/task to I want - I selected OPEN WITH WINDOWS MEDIAM PLAYER. WMP opens, then get an error pop up saying WMP exprienced a problem and has to close. So I tried it using the WinDVD software I have installed - exactly the same prob! Does it every time so I can't view DVD's on here at all :( Any idea's? |

Yeah it plays normal CD's fine.... Just installed a DVD-RW drive and thats the same aswell so it ain'ta drive problem.
Just gonna try a VCD - see if that works or not...... |
Right. Interesting.
I inserted a VCD (made with Nero, ran fine on my other PC in both WMP and Intervideo WinDVD) It plays in WMP fine, but same problem when trying to play in Intervideo WinDVD... Get error pop up saying it has to close. So I am ginna uninstall WinDVD and try a different one I have - see if that works. |
Right, uninstalled WinDVD, installed the version I had previously had. I can now play VCD files in WinDVD again, but cannot play DVD files still :wall:
Get the same error report and it shuts down :wall: |

Thrush, what dvd are you trying to watch ? Don't be shy lad, we're all grown up's here ;)
Firstly, bin WIN DVD, it's shite, what you want lad is Cyberlink Power DVD :top: I can MSN it to you, or I can zip it with winzip and e-mail it to you (about 7 meg in size roughly) Windows Media Player may not play the DVD as there's no DVD encoder installed. Normally installing WIN DVD would of got round that issue. |

Dan - it has the same effect on any DVD I try - from proper shop bought films like "Day After Tomorrow" and that "iRobot" to ripped/copied ones (and thats anything from the above type films to filthy whore porn  )
I think I have a Dell supplied install disc for the Cyberlink PowerDVD downstairs so I am gonna try that next :top: I did forget to mention tho - the version of WMP I am using is the boggo XP jobbie -as it's simpler than version 9 or 10 so I haven't bothered upgrading it (seems to run in the backround easier I have been told) Tho it's odd that I could watch DVD's using WinDVD on my old shitty PC (but not with WMP version 9) but can't do it on this one... |
YAY! Just installed Cyberlink PowerDVD and now I can watch DVD's on the PC again :top: Just tried a proper shop bought one, so gonna try some, err, not so "proper" ones now

As dan says though, media player doesnt come with a DVD decoder so you will need to install one seperately. thrush, now that you've got power DVD installed you'll probably find media player will play DVDs now too. |
Never thought of that, will give it a try :)
|
No it still won't do it.... Same old error message and shuts down.... Nevermind, least I got PowerDVD if I need it....

Don't like WMP 9 or 10 tho - the stock XP version is so much cleaner and less complex so runs in the backround easier (so I am told)
|
You'll need to upgrade it, I personally prefer Power DVD. :top:
|
Yeah thought as much. Not gonna bother upgrading WMP tho, as I can view DVD's in PowerDVD now that I have installed it, and VCD's work fine in both PowerDVD and WinDVD.......
|
You can also play video's that you have on the hard drive m8 :top:
|
Oops, sorry meant to say - I can view all the MPG/MPEG and WMV files I have on my HDD in WMP, just not DVD's.....
