i have tasked myself with making a new homepage for my department at work.

can anyone recommend a good free web editor to get creating with? i don't know much about HTML so this may be a steep learning curve for me

Wordpress is the only answer if you cant code it by hand imo.

microsoft frontpage is capable for that sort of thing and is something that they are likely to have as part of an office package

Frontpage does not exist anymore.

There is a decent free editor I used to use called Aptana.

i would recommend WordPress, with a good quality paid theme and a selection of plugins,
- Askimet (now comes with WP Install
- TinyMCE Text Editor Advanced
- Google XML Site map
- WP Super Cache
- Shareholic
- Contact 7 Form (or more robust contact plugin)
- Robots Meta
if you don't know much about HTML then don't dabble HTML is only about 10% of a good webpage just get signed up to WordPress or contact me for a wp directory install on a domain of your choice
