Why can't I delete certain files?

I have a couple files/folders on my PC that I "procured" from the internet ( ;) ) which I don't want.... Trouble is the PC won't let me delete them!

I click to highlight, then hit DEL and it thinks for a few seconds, then tells me it can't delete cos the file is being used by another programme :wall: But it fucking ain't

Sometimes I have just rebooted and then deleted and it's been fine, but these two (one avi file and one folder containing a different avi file) won't delete!

Why not?

Drewman Oct 11, 2007 05:57 PM

Cos i'ts being used  It's not being uploaded on a p2p program at all is it ?

Thrush Oct 11, 2007 06:43 PM

No it's not being used at all.... I know that, as the only two programmes that used each file were 1) uTorrent (to download it) and VLC Media Player (to play it) Both aren't using it, and it has been "deleted" from uTorrents list so I can remove the file from my PC.....

Which is why I can't understand what's stopping me delete the files :wall:

How do I find out if any other programme etc is using the file and stopping me delete them?

Alex_86 Oct 11, 2007 07:35 PM

start the comp in safe mode

then delete them

the reason is that if your files it started in winamp, media player, deamon, ect they usually are in the playlist ect

therefore win tell you that its in use :DD:

Thrush Oct 11, 2007 08:20 PM

Alex - they aren't in use. They aren't in any WMP or VLC playlists, other files have been played with these programmes since then and they have deleted fine - just these two won't.

I just tried booting into safe mode and deleting - get the same message :wall:

Running out of idea's here as I was hoping safe mode would do it and it didn't :wall:

Thrush Oct 11, 2007 09:05 PM

Getting on my fucking tits now :wall:

Googled and found info stating it's an XP bug that mostly relates to AVI's.... One fix is to cut and paste it to the desktop, then delete. Did that and it worked on one file, but the other isn't working. Then tried three recommended "kill" programmes (Dr Delete, Sure Delete and MoveOnBoot - all of which schedule the file for deletion when windows boots, to avoid Windows trying to "catalogue" the avi) - none worked :wall:

FUCKS SAKE

Thrush Oct 12, 2007 09:39 AM

Tried it, still won't delete it :wall:

Alex_86 Oct 12, 2007 12:08 PM

sorry mate

but recheck all the progs you have used it in. that it aint in the playlist

you could also try to run regedit and search for the file there and delete what ever that comes up

Thrush Oct 12, 2007 02:52 PM

I only tried it with two prog's - WMP and VLC and niehter have it listed so it's not being used....

I don't like doing regedit as it's too easy to fuck it up.....

DOS command DEL doesn't work either :wall:

djmillsy Oct 12, 2007 09:29 PM

have you tried a system restore to before they arrived?

Thrush Oct 12, 2007 10:09 PM

Millsy - thats the ONE thing I haven't done :wall:

Usually it doesn't delete files tho, it just restores settings and moves files, it doesn't delete ones that have arrived after the date you restore to..... Hence why I haven't tried that.....

Drewman Oct 13, 2007 12:31 PM

Right Click > Check "Hidden" > Apply > OK

File gone! to the untrained eye  :top:

Thrush Oct 13, 2007 12:46 PM

Thats not getting rid of it tho is it ;) :wall:

Drewman Oct 13, 2007 05:23 PM

Goto "Run" type "msconfig" and try and find the offending file under the "startup" tab to see if it's running when Windows boots.

Or have you tried task manager [Ctrl + Alt + Del] to try and see if its running there under "Applications" so you can end process?

Thrush Oct 14, 2007 07:25 AM

I doubt it will be under the start up tab - it's a video file, not a programme....

Like with with Task Manager - it's not in there as it's a video file thats not in use, even tho Windows is convinced it is :wall:

Drewman Oct 14, 2007 11:18 AM

Re-install Windows

Thrush Oct 14, 2007 11:54 AM

Fuck right off

Tho I am beginning to think that might be the only option left :wall:

But I ain't reinstalling just to get rid of a 700mb file, it's not like I am short on space - but it's pissing me off as I don't want it, don't need it, but mostly cos Windows is winning and I don't want it too  I tell the PC what it can and can't do - not the other way around!

djmillsy Oct 14, 2007 01:18 PM

have you found the pre fetch file and deleted it then tried to delete it

Alex_86 Oct 14, 2007 02:16 PM

regedit mate, search for the file.. delete the key that comes up with the file name.. then delete the file

Thrush Oct 14, 2007 02:31 PM

Nope cos I have no idea what a pre fetch file is

Hockney Oct 14, 2007 04:41 PM

Thrush Oct 14, 2007 05:02 PM

YOU ARE A FUCKING GOD!!!!!!:eek::eek:

Went first time, no fucking around - right click, "Unlocker", ticked "delete" from the drop menu and BAM - file deleted in about 1.5seconds

Hock, you really are the fucking MAN! :top::clap::top::clap::top:

THANK YOU!

DanRSturbo Oct 14, 2007 07:36 PM

The other option would of been to move it to either one of your other hard drives, or one of your other pc's you have lying around and then delete it.
