So, after some loss of power issues and a slight mis-fire on start up, my car has started tapping... So the usual culprit (the cam) was taken out last night and there are various wears marks and pits in it... Ive also measured the cam up, to highlight the wear for you guys
Lobe 1 36.5mm
2 36.4mm
3 36.5mm
4 36.1mm
5 35.1mm
6 35.8mm
7 36.5mm
8 33.9mm and worn very unevenly, with the surface of the lobe looking corroded and pitted!
The lifter on number 8 was dished underneath but cam out easily and the lifter on 6 was collapsed, held no spring back pressure...
Im now making the decision of a standard pattern cam for around £100 with lifters or a Kent/Newman for £300+!
I also noted that the sides of the lobes are all showing signs of wear and are very rough in casting, i think when i get a new cam i will spend some time de-burring and cleaning the lobes up with a fine file and some wet and dry before installation. Has anybody bothered with this before?
Also i was thinking of having the cam hardened, or would it then eat the lifters?
