The colour makes it easier to identify the fuse / mcb size for replacement, although now it's mcb you don't replace anywhere near as often.
As the size of fuse / mcb increases the slots in the holder and blades on the fuse carrier / mcb get bigger.
That means you can't fit a 32amp fuse / mcb in a 6 amp holder.
