Text speak has caused a lot of these problems,look at me,I just used it above (IMHO) but I remember reading an article last year that even the A grade gcse students used words like "kids" to describe children etc,that was a red mark in my day,and I'm only 34!!!
I think general abbreviations such as that one are ok (though you should wash more - google alternatives for IMHO!), its the m8's and l8rs that will do the damage.
