Once upon a time yes, but FWD is more capable than it's ever been. I don't agree that RWD or 4WD is always going to be faster. It's not like the BMWs trounce the FWD opposition in the BTCC (although I don't know if they get a weight penalty for being RWD?)
I can totally understand how it seems wrong for a performance car to 'pull' you rather than 'push'. But just because it's the conventionally expected norm that fast cars are RWD it doesn't mean that there can't be exceptions to the rule.
