Is the garage on land that once could have belonged to a neighbour? I presume you mean the garage is leasehold, and possibly they bought the land off a neighbour on some 100 year deal.... I'd ask whoever's doing your conveyancing - Or the Estate agents (make them actually do some work for the money they'll be making
