I converted a zetec XR2i to RST some years back. I recall that this wire is like that on purpose - only 2 inch or so of wire that goes nowhere. It is used on other models. I had similar problems that were down to the relays etc – for example, fuel relay on zetec seems to pulse the fuel pump, whereas the RS uses a constant live feed. If you are getting no spark and there is definitely power to the module then it could also be the wiring to the CPS as this usually gets a lot of heat damage near the sensor. The CPS does not have a live feed. You need a slow speed scope to check the signal – I think the signal is a few volts above ground. Spikes can be seen on a scope when the engine cranks that corresponds to the missing flywheel tooth. Also, a poor battery will stop the module working correctly as the crank speed will not be enough for the sensor to produce a large enough signal.
