Escort M3 Zetec - Running Issues, Please Help...
Hello Folks,
I have recently got my still-born Zetec Escort project back on the road after a ten year sabbatical due to project 'Wife & Kids'.
The car drives quite nicely but I have a few issues with the engine.
(Old Photo)
Could you please help me? The issues are:
1) I have had to unplug the Idle Speed Control Valve as it try's to idle at 2-3000rpm and hangs when you blip the throttle. With it unplugged it cuts out so not an air leak. The throttle stop has temporarily been wound out to give an idle of 850rpm.
2) There is a rev limiter kicking in at 4000rpm. (could this be the clutch pedal switch?)
3) Although the car runs and drives smoothly with good low down torque the performance seems to be a bit lacking and fuel consumption is rather excessive so I believe that it is over-fueling. I have not yet pulled the plugs to verify this but it's not leaking externally.
The engine is a 1997 2.0ltr Silvertop
It is running the PATS system.
The ECU came from eBay (with matching key & transponder ring) as the original was not available, it was advertised as being from a Manual car.
There is no Cat.
The original Bosch K-Jet system fuel pump is being used.
The engine light is wired in correctly and goes out.
I have plugged in a fault code reader and found the following codes:
P0443 - Evaporation Emissions Control Purge Valve (not fitted)
P0743 - Powertrain - Torque Converter Circuit (ECU from a Manual? or are they all the same?)
P0750 - Powertrain - Shift Solenoid "A" (as above)
P1504 - Powertrain - Intake Air Control Circuit (ISCV unplugged?)
Going though the faults I have described:
1) I cannot see how any of the above would effect the idle speed (I believe that the last code is purely there because I have unplugged the valve but will try to verify by plugging in a spare valve to complete the circuit.
2) Is there a difference between Manual and Auto ECUs? Could it be that I have been sold an auto ECU? Or do I need to connect the Clutch pedal switch to earth?
3) Again I cannot see how any of the above could cause the engine to run rich.
If any of you have any experience of any of this then any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Smiler.

Thanks for that, that's brilliant! At least I now know what I have got and the reason for the Rev limit. Does it effect the performance of the engine at all? (i.e. are the maps different?). I'm thinking that if all I need to do is send a wire or two to earth I may as well stick with it.
The photo is old, I haven't got an up to date one on my laptop. The MAF sensor is fitted.
There is currently an Ecu, key, Transponder kit on eBay from a '99 2.0ltr Mondeo. It doesn't state what transmission it is for but has the code BASH. Do you know if this would be suitable?
Thanks again for the reply, it's nice to get help from someone who knows their onions.

The ecu controls the auto box, I would think the 4K brick wall is some kind of kick down.
Do your self a favour and get a manual ecu.
