Default Rs turbo drivers inner drive shaft seal gearbox

Hi can someone give me some advice i changed the drivers inner drive shaft seal it would not come out had basically welded it self in so had to cut with stanley blade bit by bit to get all out . I noticed before fittin the seal it sat back in gearbox about Couple of cm,when put new seal on basically sat flush with gearbox housing will not go back anymore tryed big socket etc wont have it, is this because the old seal mite have been worn away thats why sat back further and obviously drive shaft went in couple of cm more before. I have no leaks now just for peace of mind really can someone reasure me cheers

Were they the same thickness?
There's no reason the seal should sit further out unless you left a bit of the old seal in there or the new seal is thicker.
I don't think it matters too much where it sits.
I had a problem with my rs1600i seals, from memory the old seals were flush with the gearbox and were leaking and the new seals bottomed out and were around 4mm below the casing, they leaked too as the previous owner had painted the driveshaft where the seals sit!

Sounds like you left the old seals metal outer in the box. They generally go in a bit, certainly never fitted them to a BC box where theyve stopped and sat flush

Under the rubber coating is metal (otherwise it would be a floppy seal!)

As per above, the remains of the metal inner frame appear to have been left in the box.

Tbh, ive usually been able to pop out the seals (whole) by just getting a flat blade screwdriver behind it and levering out. You can get picks (machinemart are cheap enough) that may help as they can grab from behind a bit easier.
Just try not to score the actual gearbox when prying the remains out.
