Thankyou, that sounds like the way to go then as I like the idea of the fan staying on for a bit when the engines stopped running,
Thanks again

30 - 12v 30a supply
85 -(can be linked to pin 30)
86 - negative/earth which is switched by a thermostat

You're just putting permanent feed to pin 85 (linked to 30) to allow it to run after being switched off.

87 is always the accessory whether it's a spot light, a fan whatever...

Cheers for your help.Im gonna get it wired up soon as because right now I have it on a switch and that's not good at all.Isnt the thermostat that's wired to pin 86 classed as an accessory as well

86 in this case is going to ground through the thermostat.

As st22kyle posted previously!

When I did my conversiom on my fiesta mk4 I added the 2litre ecu and engine bay loom from the mondeo but the fan side of things was all messed up.So I want to go this way in adding a fan relay so every thing is fine again instead of using a fan on a switch. On the 2 litre blacktop thermostat housing is the fan switch on top of the housing or on the bottom and with my mondeo loom not having the original fan set up it wouldn't cause fuel problems would it like over fueling or running lean or run weird would it?

I think doga-ot should remove that drawing in case anyone follows it
the fuse is in the wrong place and the fan switch will last 2 minutes, if that.

As above the 1st diagram shows the fan switch having direct feed running through it. The relay powers the fans not the switch .

edit-The battery feeds the fans the relay allows current to flow to them . Not the switch, that just controls the one side of the relay coil.

You are still wrong though, the problem with your drawing is it shows the thermo switch inline with the fan, meaning all the current drawn by the fan motors will pass through the thermo switch. The switches can't take this kind of current and will fail. The thermo switch should be on the coil side of the relay, meaning the only current it sees is the few milliamps needed to energise the relay.
And the fuse should be the first thing in the circuit when the feed leaves the battery, any components or wiring before the fuse are unprotected should they short to earth.
And it doesn't matter if you didn't use it, it is still there for others to use. I just hope no one uses the drawing then has a problem causing a fire...

GVK #18 is the one to use.
An SPST 40/30A 12V relay is what you need.
You can use 87 as your power in through to 30 or visa versa.
Same with 85 and 86 for activation. I prefer always using pin 30 for batt + its easier to remember. My live side of the coil i remember as 86 just like the world cup 'live' lol.

Pin 86 is the relay ground, which is switched via the thermoswitch, so it connects to here and the other side of that switch to ground.

It is totally independent of the ECU, it is merely a switch that completes the relays circuit.

In modern cars this is a different story and these switches are mostly a thing of the past, instead the CTS reference is used and the ECU activates the fans when required.
