Default Temp gauge off the scale

I have put a 2.0 zetec into a mk3 escort, now runs fine till warms up and temp gauge goes off the dial and car starts to splutter etc, not sure if gauge would read right being a different engine now and needs wiring another way, anyone have any ideas?

Is it actually over heating?

Does the fan come on?

On the zetec the coolant sensor/switch is in the ecu? But is the sender?

Answering these might help someone help you

It appears the gauge is correct...

It sounds as if it may be overheating, when this happens these ECU's (assuming standard management) have a cool (no pun intended lol) 'overheating strategy' which can shut the fueling down to cylinders so they act like air pumps, when this happens you will obviously notice a considerable decrease in performance.

I removed thermostat today and car seems to run a lot better, rad not getting anywhere near as hot now and car not cutting out like before however gauge still goes off the dial, I imagine the sensor is wrong for gauge, the big question now is how to I get round this to get correct reading, could I cut in a resistor of some kind on feed to gauge?

Ecu has 2FCD on it, believe it's xr2i
Sender is the one that was on engine already, little grey 2 pin type, was thinking of changing but then will it not give ecu wrong reading?
Only other thing I can think of doing is tapping into rad with mk3 sender
Also is this ecu actually ok for 2.0

Any more help or info on this would be great if anyone can help, also went to get new plugs today but the ones shop gave me were slightly shorter than ones in engine, shop reckons they are correct for my engine, can anyone clarify correct plugs for 2.0 zetec r? Thanks
