Running in CVH
Hello guys,
What is your opinion on engine running in? I changed conrod and main bearings rest has done 4000 km already. At the moment i'm running mineral oil [15W40 from halfords], but with only bearings done how much km's to run in the engine before changing to decent oil?
Is there a need to stay out of high rpms and boost?
Mainly piston rings need to settle in isn't it?

the following method is from a race driver not mine (don't know how to handle it with turbo engines, maybe not much boost):
if you running in like the race driver method the material from the pistons/rings will stick on the cylinder wall and other materials on other locations possibly, too (not to be confused with piston seizure etc.) and this means no wear cause the same material has the same hardness grade (this is only possible if the engine/parts are new, after some miles not anymore). At first the wear is faster but then with a decent oil it will stop practically. After opening the engine it was like new.
if you running in like the car manual says the engine will wear slower at first but then it will never stop and it's continuously rising with the mileage (with bad oil even faster) and you will have more oil consumption.
Hope this makes sense Pity, can't find the thread anymore.
- running in oil 15W-40
- good warming up
- then alternate speeds/revs
- high revs (til limiter) WITHOUT load only (for example high revs only downhill, not uphill etc.)
- cooling down
