Default 2.0 Silvertop in a MK6 GTI - Buying a whole Mondeo????

I know this gets asked frequently but during my research everyone seems to be buying a 2.0 silvertop engine for the conversion and chopping and changing water pumps etc.

My question is can I just buy a whole mondeo and remove engine, gearbox, ecu looms etc. (or whatever else is needed) and remove all the above from my GTI and drop the new stuff in?

I'm not sure where to start but definitely want some more power as I took mine to Brands Hatch on a track day and she got lapped heaps of times bless her.....!!

hi mate,, my gti has a 2.0 silvertop fitted from a mondeo. basically I used the water pump and oil pump and sump from the escoert engine, also I used a pre pats ecu from a early mondeo, this dousnt have a chipped key. ecu code was dewy. I used my original engine loom but you have to swap a few wires around on the ecu plug. but it was easy. conversion is defo worth doing. air filter and good exhaust and it goes quiet well

Cheers mate - Im glad you say it makes a difference cos ive heard so many people say its not worth the hassle so was getting a bit worried about comitting to it!

I know a fair bit and tend to get my hands dirty but nothing ever like this. I thought I would have to swap the whole lot - Engine, Gearbox, ECU, Looms but from reading your comments it seems thats not the case.

Just to clarify then, I just need a 2.0 Silvertop (130bhp from a Mk1 I presume)?
Take the GTI Lump out, and nick the water pump, oil pump and sump, put the mondeo lump in and attach everything to that then change the ECU (any ECU or from the same engine?) and still use my existing GTI Key? I read about the ECU pins needing to be changed so I already know about that.

I just thought buying a mondeo could be an option and then taking everything from the same car would be easier!

this might be a stupid comment, but cant an rs2000 engine got into a gti easier? you will get 150hp then. or even one bored out to 2.3?

I was under the impression that the rs2000 had different mounts and required a little more work?

i domt know, sure someone will though. not saying it will go straight in, but surely a rs2000 engine from a mk 6 will be easier to fit into a mk6 gti than a different model cars engine would.

The 2.0 silvertop will fit straight in and requires no gearbox changes etc. and seems to be the most common conversion - think ill stick with this route as if I was changing to an RS Lump it'd be just as easy and cheap probably to buy an RS..!

Just testing the water at the minute but have got a few ideas so may start getting together a shopping list! Only problem is the DEWY, DEEP and DESK ECU's are quite rare as there aren't any locally on eBay....maybe I might be able to find someone on here that has one they wanna part with for a fair price...!

I braught a early mk2 mondeo with silvertop engine for 100 quid, braught a ecu for 40 quid deep, desk or dewy (one of the 3 anyway) wayed the mondeo in for 140 with the 1.8 engine in the boot, so my conversion cost £0 to do lol. except oil and coolant, I think I put a cambelt on too while it was off. iv done a few trackdays in it, its not too bad. defo quicker then the 1.8, and a fair bit more tourqe. u can just use the 2.0 on the 1.8 ecu. the MAF will sense more air flow and calculate the afr required.

I just sourced myself a DESK ecu for £20 which was a result and see that your writing on another thread Forevaford that you have a DESK ecu linked to your GTI. I know you don't live local to me but any help you could give on the wiring would be great.... Maybe even a pic of the wires going into the ecu if that would help me identify anything....

Things are starting to move in the right direction now!!!

What silvertop does it have to be for the DESK ecu to work - should it be a mk1 or mk2 mondeo or can it be from a newer vehicle providing its a silvertop and is 130bhp?
