I got the pulley loose but I can't seem to pull it out because it touches the crossmember which doesn't allow it to move enough.
I'm doing this in a 1.6 CVH engine, and I expected it to be possible with the engine in place.
Any tips ?

I was being silly as it wasn't the crossmember in the way, it was actually a plastic splash guard under the engine.
How stuff is much easier during the day and when you jack the car up
