Hi all, currently have a 1.8 Zetec Cougar which died while being driven the other night. Established no spark, so i removed a good working coil pack from my focus (same engine) and fitted it to the Cougar with no luck. When fitted to the cougar, the coil pack got very hot to touch, and when i fitted it back on the focus, the focus then refused to start (Dead coil pack).

So, what could be killing the coil packs? My first thought would be a short in the wiring somewhere, but not sure where to look?

Any thoughts or ideas welcome

Has the car had any work done on it all, (live touching the body,bad earth)

could be the coil part of the ECU blown

a dead lead or plug will do it, even a too large plug gap as it will cause excessive resistance so the coil pack is working extra hard to get the spark across.

When i had my mk1 focus i went through 2 coil packs.and 1 on a mondeo.
