Default Escort RS Cosworth (over fueling)

Hi All,

I am wondering with the condition of my car. I live in Jakarta Indonesia and hence Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a very very rare one. On New Year Eve 2012 to 2013, I finally got the car with a relatively ok condition.

Condition when I got the car
- Car: Ford Escort RS Cosworth, YB blue top engine
- ECU: Haltech, don't know which one. Original P8 was still there but not used (I opened the ECU and saw pectel thing in it. Wondering if it is an add-on).
- Several sensors have been removed/changed to run with the Haltech ECU, including the crank pulley.
- Ignition: using somehow wasted spark with individual coils (no distributor), taken from Hyundai

Given the above condition, the car runs and drives OK. But the power was not there and top speed was around 120 kmh. I was not happy with the performance and I love any collectible cars in their original condition. So I decided to work on the car to get it back to original condition (all of the works are done by a local garage who never touches Cosworth YB before).

So I have bought several parts to start the project
- Healthy P8 ECU (according to the seller, sealed and tested on a running standard car).
- TPS PF09
- TDC crank sensor
- bracket TDC crank sensor
- distributor straight cap
- Ignition plug set
- Ignition module amplifier
- Ignition coil
- 2.5 MAP sensor
- Water Temp blue sensor

The mechanic worked on the wires and tried as much as possible to keep its originality. I have also bought engine loom connector kit.

The result is that the car starts with heavy over fueling. Black smokes come out from the exhaust. It was only up and running for a couple of minutes and then died.

I checked the injector and it looks like its light blue from the top (not sure).

Could anyone tell me what the potential problems are?

Your help will be very much appreciated.

best, Don

Is the Lambda sensor wired in? do you have a phase sensor inside the distributer?

i can't see any numbers on the injector. My question is: will the injector have any impact when the car is running standard ecu? ecu will send how much fuel needed so the injector wont matter. please do correct me if i am wrong.

at the back of the engine, under the inlet there is a connection for the cabin heater. Right under it is the coolant sensor, which is blue.

I have read a number of times on here that over fueling is due to this sensor not reading right, but it has not happened to me

William

EDIT: I just noticed you say you have changed it, but did you get a new or used one?

The ecu will NOT send how much fuel is needed.
The ecu opens the injector for some time. Given the size of the injector that will indirectly give an amount of fuel. If the injectors are not standard (read larger) you get overfuelling.

You may need to remove the fuel rail to see the number pn the injectors. If there are no numbers at all I suspect that these are rather big injectors and certainly not standard.

Hi all,

I have my car running ok now.. Two of my ECUs can now be used. I fit 3 bar map and grey injectors.

First ECU. No chip, standard.
Idle is fine. When i try to accelerate, it seems to hold back.

Second ECU. Chipped, not sure what it is.
Idle is ok but rpm can only be up to 4k. It runs ok but there seems to be a rev limiter..

Can anyone help again please?

As always, your help is always appreciated.

Best, don

Check the coolent temp sensor and make sure it is connected
Try another 3 bar map sensor
Check for air leaks in the vac pipework
Gap the plugs correctly, check the phase sensor as well.
