Default YB Bottom end wear/rebuild - opinions

Well my cossie oil pressure dropped recently so I've taken the engine out to inspect. Pressure was fine when cold or driving along but if allowed to idle when hot the pressure sometimes dropped low enough for the warning light to flicker on.

205 2WD block currently running around 380bhp.

First suspect was the oil pump, turned out to be very worn so I then dismantled the bottom end to check condition, pics in photobucket album here... http://s22.photobucket.com/user/bbve...20Bottom%20End

All shells are ford items and everything appears to be standard size according to my manual. Measurements were..

Crank Main journals
1 - 56.94
2 - 56.94
3 - 56.95
4 - 56.94
5 - 56.94

Crank Big End Journals
1 - 51.97
2 - 51.96
3 - 51.96
4 - 51.96

Thrust washers
1 - 2.30
2 - 2.30
3 - 2.32
4 - 2.35

Pistons
1 - 90.67
2 - 90.63
3 - 90.65
4 - 90.65

Rod bore, big end w/o shell
1 - 55.08
2 - 55.08
3 - 55.08
4 - 55.06

Shell Markings -

Main (caps) 9B V86HF 6333 220172 V3A

Main (block) A9 V86HF 6333 220172 A3A

Big End (caps) 9B V86HF 6211 220172 A3A

Big End (Rod) 9B V86HF 6211 220172 A3A

Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on this, as Yb's go is this wear fairly normal, does the crank look scored enough to warrant a grind or simply polish? how far I should go with a rebuild, whats good to use, whats good to avoid etc.

This is something I will do myself so please don't suggest tuners, just something I want to do, not scared to invest in tools etc and never scrimped or saved a few quid on the car yet - it will get everything it needs. Machine shop suggestions welcome in Bedford/Northampton areas though.

Thanks

Brad

I would polish up everything before putting it back together. Better safe than sorry now as you have already taken it apart Seems to be a bad oilpump!

What are you measuring with? and have you checked for taper and ovality? It looks to me as if its had a very hard life. I'd suggest taking it to a machine shop and asking their opinion on the parts as you can't really tell by photos.

as for machine shops nearby (to bedford), either take it to buntingford engine services, or mass racing.

Thank for the replies. I have only measured with digital caliper so far so figures not to be taken too seriously - did check for taper and ovality best I could and seemed fine.

Does it really look that bad for a 23 year old engine that appears to have never been apart and is on std sizing throughout?

I have been in touch with a machine shop today to arrange a proper inspection. Will also look up buntingford engine services and mass racing now.

Cheers

just looks a bit abused, but that's not uncommon for a cossie really. I work for a place near Cambridge, i'd say bring it to us, but we're a little far away.

I would imagine it'd need a rebore and a grind looking at the pictures, but can't really give any solid advice based on pictures and vernier (or very-near, as we like to call them) measurements

Thanks guys, one other thing I did notice while stripping it down was that there wasn't a full set of dowels for the main caps fitted. What would be the reason for this?

Cheers

Should only be dowells on the centre and rear main caps.
