Default HELP Sierra cutting out

Hi all I have just got a sierra ghia ( 2.0 8v twin cam) at the weekend and it is cutting out randomly but what I thort was strange was all the ingnition lights stayed on like the car was running as it should but even in gear whilst costing at about 30mph the rpm gauge dropped to zero any info as to why this is happening would be great
Thanks Shane
