Default HELP ME PLEASE!!! Cosworth oil/water mixing

Hello everybody,

I have a problem with my Cossie oil/water mixing. Sierra Cosworth 4WD engine...

Have tried a few things but no joy as of yet.....

Oil/water mix ( creamy gunge ) is in oil breather ( NOT BAILEY....I think it a homemade job ). Creamy gunge is inside the oil breather, in all the oil pipes also i.e. pipe going to sump, pipe going to cam cover, pipe going to block and pipe going to atmosphere. Oil breather is NOT breathing from both sides of the block, only right hand side as you look at the engine from the front.

I put a K&N air breather on the oil breather atmosphere pipe, still creamy gunge coming out.

Oil at dipstick is black and OK.

Oil at sump is black and OK.

Oil at cam cover is a little bit creamy but was black before I drove it a few miles.

Removed the modine ( oil cooler located behind oil filter ) and bypassed the water pipes .....still have creamy gunge in the oil breather.

Heard that removing the turbo water cooling pipe could be the issue.....haven't tried bypassing this yet.

Turbo now has a small misfire when boosting......I'm hoping the turbo isn't knackered....

I heard it could be the head gasket / cracked block etc but don't want to go down this road unless absolutely necessary because you all know how expensive playing that game is!

Any help would be greatly ap[preciated and possibly stop me going grey early on in my life

Thanks everyone.............!!!!!

Sounds like the HG to me, you're only limited to the areas where water and oil can interface to be causing the issue, and the breather isn't one of those, all you will be seeing is the result of an underlying problem.

Thanks for your reply rog.

Have u any suggestions as to where to look or what to investigate further.......without ripping and stripping the head gasket etc.....

I'm new to this game so just looking for a little direction.

Much appreciated, cheers

"Heard that removing the turbo water cooling pipe could be the issue.....haven't tried bypassing this yet"

Bit confused by that so have you removed the turbo water pipe or not?! And if so how have you routed if?!

If HG is gone the oil in sump should be creamy too as it will circulate but then does take a while so depends how much it has been run like that.

I bought an engine off hear years ago while seemed fine when I bought it but had similar problem and oil in sump ended up creamy, took head off in the end and the block had cracked round 3 bolt holes!!!

It could very well just be condensation in this weather.

I would just clean out all your pipes.

Until you get creamy crap on the dipstick i wouldn't worry.

@Toe Knee: Haven't bypassed the turbo water cooling pipe. All I was going to do is block it off temporarily with a bolt and jubilee clip.....this is what I was told to do!

@cossie4i+: Cheers....I have heard this a lot but I am scepticle to say the least as I have had the engine warm for definite and still the liquids are mixing.....

Anyway my progress to date is that she's in the garage....Going to do a compression test first and work from there.......It's in good hands........

I hope and pray!!!

If it's not on the dipstick or in the header tank relax.

Just clean all the breather pipes out.

If you decide to block off the water pipe going from thermostat housing to the turbo it's best to run a pipe from the stat housing back to the return on the header tank.

I blocked mine of on my old cossie years ago without returning to the header tank and the car kept overheating.

Bit late now though by the sound of it!!
