Atlas Axle Rebuild - Help
Hi
Just replacing the Salisbury axle with an Atlas from a Mk3 Capri. I have to reduce width - no problem - and fitting all new LSD, drive shafts, CW & P + bearings.
I am trying to find any instructions of how to rebuild the axle, in particular with all the new bits, of where to start with the pinion shaft. Do I "Dry" assemble with zero shims behind the bearings? and then work out shims required by measurement to get the correct contact between the teeth. What is the recommended torque for the nut on the pinion shaft fitted with the crush spacer?
ANY help - details appreciated. Its all for a Marcos V6 I use for Hillclimbing and do all the work myself.
Is there any articles in the "Gold" section before I spend my £10?
Peter

I have rebuilt many Atlas and English axles for customers
Without the correct tool it is total guess work to set the pre-load on the pinion nut and NOT reccomended
As for the backlash and which shims are required this must only be done after the pinion pre-load is correct
Here is an English for my own car - different to Atlas but same equipment to set-up the diff

OK All sorted - I now have, via a few helpful PM's, the turning torque to set the preload on the pinion + all other data required. The only problem I see is how to get the bearing next to the pinion teeth off a few times during the setup procedure. I dont want to grind away anything but you need to get the bearing pullers onto the bearing - somehow. Any ideas?

Hi
Well I experimented and used the old pressure tube to initially set up the clearances. Then I put the new one on and - no difference in backlash, only in the torque required.
