Default Not a Ford! But MPG is low on my runner, help!

I bought a 1997 Rover 216 SLI 16v Auto the other week as my run about to get me to and from work.

It has 99,564 miles

Ok..... She has had 4 prev owners, no service history and 99,564 miles on her.

I have just given her a full service which included..... NGK plugs, HT leads, Magnatec 10/40 oil, oil filter, air filter, new thermostat, throttle bodie and breather pipes all cleaned and a bottle of STP Complete fuel system cleaner......... Still the MPG is low

Any ideas??

Wouldnt expect much over 28 mpg from the k-series 1.6 engines on localish trips & yours is auto so that wont help any.... What are you actually getting out of it ?

Had one briefly myself a few years back & was never to impressed with the mpg mine was a gti with the added 10hp or there abouts ....

I have bud

20mpg I had a Volvo T5 in the summer to take my dogs about in and I was getting 22mpg out of that...... a 2.5 5cyl Turbo with a RR printout of 248.8bhp..... Think my Rover is pushing out a meaty 15bhp.....lol!

What were you getting mpg out of your Cossie bud?

About that id say , £20 quid use to get me about 90 miles , Atleast then the fuel was alot cheaper though .... Reckon my stage 1 saff that i had before the white stage 3 one would have cracked 28 an prob abit more on a run.... you wana get yourself an old 306 td or something for work thats pretty poor what the old rovers returning ..

Probably gunked up full of shit after never seeing more than 2500rpm in its life and valves, head mechanicals and probably cat and exhaust system gunked up to fuck. Some nice 6000rpm plus driving after its warmed up might earn you some MPG. As usual, smooth acceleration, no harsh braking or acceleration for good MPG always run down through the gears off throttle up to lights and junctions.

I assume your auto has the CVT box ?, if so should be getting 30 even on those trips, as the CVT is a ace thing, makes them bloody fast as well for an auto they are amazing.
I would first get the emissions checked, looking maybe at a dicky lambda.
