95 Fiesta 1.3 cold start problem
Hi folks, I've just joined this forum so forgive me if this question has already been asked. I just recently picked up a 95 Fiesta 1.3. and up to a few days ago it has been running and starting beautifully. The easiest way to describe the problem I'm getting now is, it now starts like a carburetor with no choke, it will start but will cut out imediately if you dont keep the accelerator down, and until it warms up, it is very spluttery, has a noticable flat spot and wont idle properly, keeps cutting out. Once it reaches normal temp, it drive fine, so obviously it's a cold start device problem. Looking thru various forums , I found a topic similar to what I'm getting and refered to removing no 19 fuse (20amp IGN) start engine, switch off and refit fuse. I tried this and got a noticable improvement but still have very little fast idle (although it now tends to gradually creap up) and is still a bit reluctant to tick over, but is definately better than it was, although there is still plenty of room for improvement. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this, and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Aidan.

Your ECU is thinking that it is colder than it is so adds more fuel. Common problem on all Ford CFi-unit cars I am afraid. By removing the fuse and starting it, you are just purging the system of excess fuel until next time.
When I worked @ Ford, they used to fit a 42kohm resistor between the wires for the coolant temp sender (under inlet manifold). This means that it will not hit the absolute lowest setting but will work fine.
Try changing the sender if you want, but it very rarely cures it.

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply, much appreciated, but with all due respect, what I'm getting is a definate lack of fuel at cold start, not excess fuel. I am a Ford Registered Technician, but I did my apprenticeship in 1977/1981 and have been out of the motor trade for a long time, so I am not too familiar with the later fuel injection systems, if it was a Mk 2 Granada 2.8 with the Bosch K-Jetronic system, I could fix anything on it blindfolded, but the newer EFI's and CFI systems are somewhat alien to me. If you could imagine my fiesta had a carburator and the choke was not operating at cold start, that is excactly what is happening to mine, it is behaving as though there is no choke fitted. it is definately not over fueling. Re the no 19 fuse, from what I understand, apart from purging the system, it also resets some module or ECU. Since I did the fuse thing, it is starting better each time but is still not as good as it used to be. I dont have a workshop manual for the car yet, but from what I understand of the CFI system, there is a single injector in the throttle body with a stepper motor??? or idle control solenoid attatched to the right hand side of the throttle body (as you view from the front looking back) and underneath is a small red disc type thing, which I confess I dont have a clue what it is or what it does. Correct me if I'm wrong here, at cold start, the injector should deliver extra fuel and the idle control/stepper motor should raise the idle to give a fast idle at cold start. As the engine warms up, the fuel delivery and fast idle should decrease until normal hot idle is reached. With mine, it is behaving as though the system is recieving a signal telling it that the engine is at normal operating temperature when it should be telling the system it is cold. When the engine reaches normal temp, it behaves perfectly and drives faultlessly so to my mind, the injecter and the idle soleniod are working correctly, they just dont appear to be getting the correct signals at cold start, so I'm reasonably certain that one or more of the sensors are faulty. The temperature sender unit (under the manifold) is actually missing from my engine, the hole has been blanked off, but, the car has been running and starting perfectly despite the sender unit being missing, it's only the past week that this problem has occured and it occured suddenly as opposed to gradually so I believe the fault lies in some other sensor. I hope this explains a bit more clearly what is happening, thanks.
