Escort RS Turbo Misfire

Right been having a problem with my RS a couple of times recently and tonight its finally got worse.

was driving back down the dual carriageway last weekend and all of a sudden it started back firing and the rev counter was going up and down, but when i boosted it was fine?! however after driving for a while it cleared itself and i've been using it all week no probs..........

......then tonight i drove to my gf's, pulled up and left it for 10-15 mins and came out to start it again and its backfiring like a bitch, flames and smoke out the back and don't want to idle properly and the rev counter still going all over.

Am i right in thinking it could be the ignition coil as its running a standard one at the minute.

its a s2 engine running mfi.

any help is appreciated, thanks
