escort 1.8td tuning and problems
hi all, this is my 1st post so please bear with me.
ive recently bought CSM,s escort van and im looking at getting a few more horses out of if.
its a 1.8 td endura 70bhp without the intercooler.
im planning on fitting an intercooler from either a mondeo or escort td (top mount), increasing the boost, fiddling with the pump etc. ive got a couple of the threads saved off here but can anyone direct me in the right direction of where to start.
which intercooler should i use? i know there are different turbo's, down pipes etc. which ones should i use?
also i cant find the boost fueling on the pump or the pipe that leads from the turbo to the pump?!
any guides, links or pics would be appreciated.
im a hands on kind of bloke so ill be doing it all myself.
also to pick peoples brains, it drinks a bit when over 65 mph (30mpg) but around town itll do 50mpg. it also seems flat after 2500rpm but pulls nicely (for a 1.8td at least) up to that.
im a beginner so please be gentle.
thanks

ive found someone else with the same problem @
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/po...ex.htm?t=58143
now like i said before when running around town and without braying the arse off it (changing up at about 2200rpm) i can easily get 45mpg
ive had a good look at the actuator today and given it a good coat of wd40 to make sure it isnt sticking. it moves underr heavy accelerating but only by a midgies dick.
could this be causing it to over-boost?
it doesnt use any oil or water, doesnt create any smoke and once warm it sits usually between the O and R of NORMAL in the temp gauge.
im really stumped and considering an engine swap as im sick of such poor economy.
HELP!

iv ecured the economy and over boost problem.
it was a sticky actuator, 3 days of smothering it all with wd40 has free'd it all of and its running lovley plus 230 miles to Ł20, get in!
bought a mondeo td to rob the intercooler, turbo, injector pump and inlet to fit to the van but after fitting the inlet manifold off the mondy today if ound out it wont fit! arrraaaggghhh
so for those who are plannin gthe same thing, the mondeo mk2 td intercooler setup wont fit!
ive sourced a mk1 td at the local scrappy, just got to take it off.
the worst part was id pollished the inlet manifold, about 5 hours worth. again arrraaaggghhh

iv got a esc td and it goes okish, i can get 110mph out of it 115 on a rel long stretch lol, tunning them is hard and probly not worth it, turning the boost up will make no difference, messing with the pump will make it smoke, slightly moor responsive but no noticable gain in power lol, gud luck

ive already turned up the boost and the max fueling and it iis a bit nippier than it was before with no extra smoke. i cant turn up the on boost fueling on mine as my pump hasnt got a boost compensator. besides if it goes bang another engine is only about Ł100. plus im on the hunt for a cheap 2.2 tdci to drop in.
is yours intercooled? if so yours will have the boost compensator so you should be able to get about 110-120bhp out of yours with buying any extras. also a little bit of smoke goes along way.
i used to have an audi a4 tdi sport with a 1.9 diesel in it, remapped to about 180bhp and when you floorsed it' it smoked like mad. went like a bloody rocket and still past its mot.
so in short "if theres no black, it's cack"

kool, yer its the intercooled version, 90 bhp, iv played with thes a bit in the past, i left the actuator pipe off before so it was running maximum boost, it was still no quicker, infact u couldent even tell any difference at all. iv had around 7 cars with fords 1,8td (indirect injection) and 120 mph is vertually imposible lol. thats standard tho, but iv turned the pump up a bit so it smoked, increassed throttle response but not power, i raised the governer to about 5200, pulled the actuator pipe off, even released the spring pressure on the "boost-fuel pressure plunger" the only thing i gained was a slightly increassed turbo spool and loads of black smoke, 0-60 times was the same as before, thats my expieriane with em.
