Default boost trouble *UPDATE*

my saff has "stage 3" parts on it, jut fitted a boost guage into it and its peaking 0.5 bar holding 0.4 bar.... im sure 0.8 is standard???? i tried adjusting the actuator up but it doe not make any difference... could my amal valve be blocked? or even standard?

Or the boost gauge is defective.
Is the amal valve clicking when you disconnect and connect the electrical wires?

remove the amal out of the loop ad pipe actuator directly from the turbo compressor housing.
see if it makes any difference.
if not, it's the actuator spring.

tried another actuator on and its slightly lower now, peaking and holding 0.4 bar.....could it be a boost leak when its getting to 0.5bar?

Check all the vacume pipe's. My m8 had this problem on his rst and it was only pushing out 90bhp cos of the leaking hose. And check to see if you have kinked the pipe too when fiddling with it

Could be any manner of things chap, my first thought when i read your first post was the Actuator, but you say you've already eliminated that. Can you give us a bit of history on the car, did you buy it recently with those bits fitted, or have you had the car for a while and fitted those bits, did it ever feel faster and seem to boost more???
What i do to set the actuator is get a foot pump and a connector, plug it into the hose and set the load on the wastgate to see when it starts moving, that way you know that it's set correct. Failing that, it could be an air leak or a duff turbo that just can put out the correct boost. From experience the car with a stage 3 chip should safely be able to boost around 1.5bar and upwards if you really get bored and fancy your chances, if the fuelling has been set etc..
I'd check all your hoses/clamps and intercooler for anything obvious.

i brought the car just recently with all the parts fitted, however the guy has had the engine out etc and it had been lying for 6 years then he put it all back together and i brought it like this.. is there anyway of checking the boost pipes for leaks by pressure testing the system somewhow? turbo was recon before it came off the road and worked perfect then he reckoned? i reckon both the actuators i've tried are standard ones though, will that make a difference?

Even if there standard it should still run about .8. It does sound like a leak unless the setup is all wrong

hold on fella, you just need a new turbo exhaust housing.
or someone to rectify the one you have.
easy to change if you've got a spanner, vice, hammer and lots of patience.
you can do it yourself if you find a housing, maybe choose one that is best for how you want yours to run too.
shouldn't be more than £30-50 i wouldn't have thought for a standard 0.48 one.

just had a look on the bay and a new one can be had for £200, which isn't too bad, but there must be someone around with a knackered t3 on a shelf woth a housign in good nick.
maybe try a turbo place and they may have one sat around

or get this one when it finishes for next to nothing:

how do you mean cost the same?

think it would be an idea to get a refurbished complete turbo as my one is just a standard turbo anyway with slight play...

if yours has a bit of play that's fine as long as there is no smoke from the unit.
if it is a bit smokey, then get it off for reconditioning, may as well chuck in a 360degree bearing too.
but, you may consider getting a 4wd cossie turbo unit as these can boost more from standard

These have been repaired before but if you say your turbo has play it may be an idea to consider a rebuild.

the play in the turbo is just sideways and its minimal, found a recipt for a rebuild 2500 miles ago also, wastegates now fixed also, i replaced the ceramic bush that wastegate pin turns on. now thats good, however i still can only get 0.5bar..... now i checked both actuators with a foot pump and turns out they both start to open at 6/7psi...... that'll be my 0.5bar then.... so whats next? new actuator at least?

It should run 1.5 bar on a -31 no problem.
