Default Escort van heater probs.

Hi all, i'm new here so go canny with me please Just been buying an Escort 55 van on a 52 plate and my heater does not blow out when you turn the blower dial. When the vents are open you can feel heat coming out. I have checked the fuses and seem ok. Any help would be gratfully accepted.

Thanks in advance, Drexel.

Firstly feel the heater pipes, as they go from the under bonnet area to the insdie of the car/heater box.
These should be nice and hot, if they are then the problem is the heater box, there are several things it could be, though if you can get hot air anywhere it shows the cold/hot control is working, so that leaves the divertor flap, this controls where the air goes, ie floor/screen, vents etc.
Get your head under the dash around the heater area and see that when the controls are operated it is causing a flap/arm etc to move, a cable may have come detached.
The normal problems with cold running stem from a knackered thermostat in which case the engine will not warm fully to temp, and be sluggish getting any kind of temp, or on some fords they have a water tap(controlled by the hot/cold control) on the bulkhead area that interuppts the supply of heated water from the engine to the heater unit.

I have just bought a 2000 Escort 55D Van and this has the same problem, the heater works fine but the blower does not work at all, can't seem to locate any motor under the bonnet, just hope its not behind the dash, will have to go and get myself another manual.

I suspect the thermostat, what does the temp gauge tell you?

temp gauge is at the half way point the pipe from the thermostat is hot and the 2 pipes that go to the matrix ones warm and the other one is not

thanks

It could be a faulty heater control valve, does it feel as if the heat control knob is connected when you move it? some have this under the bonnet so it's easy to check operation and replace if need be, this is a common problem on older Fiestas etc.

if i move it to the maximum cold it clicks like its opening and shutting sound and same again when you put it on full hot

(from in side the van moving the heat knob from blue to red with the engine off is that what you mean)

thanks again

Thats right the actual valve may still be faulty though, if it's not that then the matrix is most likely blocked.

i disconnect my matrix today and put a hose pipe in to one side off it and turned hose on, and after few min's it started to flow out the other side so reconnected it and still the same.

looks like i will have too take it out again ??

do you have to take the dash board out to get to it ???

and been told to soak it in some drain cleaner would that work ?? or shall i just buy a new one ??

thanks for you help

Thats good then, it's a worthwhile thing to do anyway, I still suspect the heater valve myself?

Check the valve first, when you move the heat control does the arm on the valve move?

Usually don't know on your car in particular but it is quite an involved job, easy enough but you need to remove dash etc.

On some cars it is under the bonnet, simply follow the feed from the water pump, if it disappears through the bulkhead then the valve is with the matrix, if not it will go the the valve under the bonnet. Probably behind the dash I would think on yours.

i just looked now cant see much under the dash and if i move the hot to the cold i can see the cable moving on the heater box which is behind the dash but that just go's in the the box

if i go in the engine bay and follow the pipe from where the water pump is it go's cross front of enigne then splits in to 2 one in to rad then carry's on round engine and then it go's to the water matrix pipes

most likely matrix blocked mate (even tho u can get water to flow through it, it dousnt pass through the the core of the matrix) a bit of a common problem on escort diesels, and a bastard to change, getting the 2 pipes off prooves a bit difficult

Just wanted to check it wasn't an external valve like other's have which are prone to failure, in that case try flushing the matrix.
