As you say the series 1 had no water cooling to turbo, it will be fine, as you say plug any holes in pipes etc.

i blocked the water feed pipes on my cossie (because one of the banjo's snapped)and i had major airlock/overheat issues.

this was resolved though by joining the water pipes together and not just plugging them up

asa bove, you'll be fine, but there is a reason for water cooling and thats so you can shut engine off sooner.
the reason the series one didn't need water cooling was that it has a bigger oil reservoir inside the core to help with core cooling.
so if you remove the water cooling, you must let the turbo cool dwon before switching off.

That's because on the YB the turbo return is the highest point, so serves as a de-gas pipe, the original thermostat housing on 3 door and 2wd sapphy had a extra stub on them just for the purpose of bleeding air out when refilling coolant, but so long as return is clear not needed.

Hi,
The water cooling was there to help the oil temps, by drawing heat away, nothing to do with shutting off sooner, that's just a advantage.
If you run without water cooling on a water cooled turbo you have to realise the water jacket around the core will act as a good insulator, retaining more heat for longer.
Internally and parts wise the s1 and s2 are 100% identical, every part is the same, the ONLY difference is the water jacket on the S2.
It's just a matter of opinion as to whether or not you can use without, use with and the heat has to go somewhere, into the main cooling system, and can in some cases cause problems, with high temps.
