Default mk5 escort lighting and fuel pump problems

hi everyone, ive got a couple of things wrong with my mk5 1.8 escort. firstly..... when i turn the ignition on one click the dip lights come on. i think its a bad earth, but cant find where, does anyone no of any suspect places? ive pulled the fuses out aswell and only one side goes out, help!!!! secondly..... the fuel pump will only work when it wants to. is it a dicky pump?? is it the relay??? does anyone no which colour relay it is?? help much appreciated pepes

right pepes, ive just had a look at the fuse box and relays, the ignition wires that go into the top of the fuse box is melted and burnt, do you think this is my problem?? the car engine still turns over but wont start??????? whoever had the car bfore me had fitted an aftermarket alarm and tapped into the blue ignition wire. does anyone no wot could cause the wires to burn and melt????
