s1 will not turn over?
hi peeps,
any ideas why my s1 is not turning over, when i go to turn it the lights in dash just dims and u can hear the fuel pump prime and stress as i have the key turned over. This is what i've done so far :
with ignition off i've got 12.6 battery power at starter and with ignition on aswell.
checked the coil wires with tester and it reads 0.01 or 0.02 and then i kept the red positive tester on the + coil wire and put my tester earth, to earth on battery an it reads 12.6 again which would be going to my coil.
So from what i've gathered the coil with my ignition switched on to position 2, should have battery power 12.6 at my coil correct so its ready to fire up and spin starter motor?
or is there a different understaning to this which should be present when ready to fire the car?
cheeRS in advance

i've tried 3 batteries which all work as i tried on mates car then removed an mine does the same thing and doesn't turn over.
am i right in saying that when your ignition is on no2 ready to fire the coil wires should when u test them have full battery power at them? so in my case 12.6 volts?
cheers

what ones the switch wire?
i got the positive on starter that has leads from battery to starter.
then theres another little push on rubber plug like the coil wires have that goes on to another thread which i have seen on some rs's with a little 8-10mm nut on? is that the switch wire?
car was running perfect week ago, parked it up and now this out of the blue, so am well stumped to say the least

nope flat battery swapped over 2 more and still nothing
the wires are 2 for negative and 2 for positive they are exactly the same as its been since i've had it.
if i run earth from battery to negative on coil the coil will have 12.6 power at coil ready to turn over with power is that not correct?
or does the coil only come live with the 12.6 when u actually have the key turned all the way over for it to spin the starter?

on the negative i have the earth wire whcih is earthed on the inner wing, and i have a thin skinny brown wire on the earth aswell
the wires are definetely as they have always been, it deffos something else.
think i need to know the basics to actually spin the starter motor

sounds like your starters tired fella
check the voltage to the starter when ign off and when the trying to crank
also check that you are getting a live when trying to start on the solinoid (sp)
have you tried to bridge the starter at all
also check the connections from the ignition barrel to the main loom as these tend to corriode and have a bad connection
my old fiesta did this and it was the connections from the black box to the main loom

i done something in the haynes manual.
Said put headlights on and try and crank car over if lights dim the starter circuit has power.
i tried it and the lights do not dim at all when turning the key all the way over and holding it for a sec or 2.
how do u bridge the starter?
when the ignition is switched off where the 13mm nut go's and holds main positive cable for battery i checked that point to the both other points on the starter and it reads 12.6

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
have you tried to nbump start the car to see if the car runs?
sounds like ur starter is foobarr'd
there should be 2 wires on the starter, thick one, with battery voltage at it, and a skinny one which either clips on or is attached with a small nut,
the skinny one should see voltage when the key is in the crank position,
if it does and the starter doesnt spoin over the engine the starter has had it.
if it doesnt get the power feed with the key in the crank position then there is ur problem.
to test yr starter with the car in neutral, get a power feed from the battery/starter thick wire and bridge it to the little wire's attaching point on the starter solenoid,
hth

right removed starter tested it and it clicks in and out perfect and spins up fine.
theres power to the starter aswell
the car starts perfect on a little push start
so i am thinking now it is either the ignition switch or my silver fuel relay which is bridged on constantly.
when i was bridging the starter motor with a screwdriver the silver fuel relay inside the car was clicking. so i am now thinking if it has direct link with starter maybe its burnt out properly now hence why it doesn't spin starter motor
sound about right?

sorry i have`nt reade every post but it sounds like the soliniod on the starter is knackered
very common problem on the turbo as the starter is the same on all cvh engine but the turbo exposes it to extremem heat which turn gunk to a paste then it just jams try
give the starter motor a good whack
bump toe start
all so jump it you may be reading 12 v which is nopt perfect but enough but you muight be low on amps which is the juice that kicks it over

oopssorry like i said never had time to read the whole thread
you say you got power to the starter im assuming you have no cranck live to the throw switch wire normaly little push on wire on the start soliniod?
if you have this then i would say it must be earth as this is all it need to turn over firing is a diffenet matter all together but if it bumps ect then it should be ok
test this and let us know
