Default Head gasket help

Hi guys and girls.

forgive me for asking but im not the best at mechanical knowledge so i wanted to ask you lot for some help. Coming home from work today only to be greeted by a nice plume of white smoke from the rear as i join the carriageway(sp?) so pull over sharpish. At this point the car dies so i get out and have a quick look about. everything seems ok until i see some white smoke coming off the exhuast pipes on the underside. I check the oil cap to find a gunky substance. I ask a good pal about this and he said head gasket so im a bit with myself and the car at the moment. Got it towed home and now im just at a loss on how to approach things in order to get it fixed.

Any advice on parts needed and things to buy/avoid for the repair will be grateful also

thank you ladies and gents
