Default Oil/excess smoke from exhaust

Ive recently bought the st 170, had abit of a moment with it earlier though, I put some oil in me car but forgot to put the cap on after driving around for about 10/15 mins realised there was smoke coming from the bonnet. So I done I quick clean to get the oil off the engine and put a bit more oil in it, but remembered to put the cap on this time. But after driving it probably no more than a mile or two I had alot of smoke coming from my exhaust, now I'm not sure if I've used the right oil. 5w 30 fully synthetic is this the right oil? And any pointers for cleaning the excess oil from me engine? Cheers!
