Default MK3 Cabriolet Zetec Turbo. SMALL UPDATE 18/03/10

Bought a MK3 Cabriolet in the summer for £100 from a scrap yard

(I know the pic's aren't very good, there wasn't much room in the back yard so couldn't take a desent pic)

Anyway all body panels are in top condition (apart from driver side wing) engine was f**ked, but i didn't mind because i already had plans on fitting a EFI Fiesta RS Turbo engine to it. One of the previous owners fitted MK4 bumpers on it & welded a lip on the bonnet to make it look like a MK4, first thing i did was take all that off. since the summer i've been collecting bits to do the engine conversion & repair/restore the body work and fittings, managed to get FRST EFI head, inlet manifold, injector rail, OFAB management & engine loom, flywheel plus a few other turbo bits, nuts & bolts, pipe holders ect, also got some new clear indicators because my car didn't have any indicator lenses!
Got a mohair hood on it's way too.

Started to strip the back end today, i want to get all the cross members, fuel pump, fuel tank ect off for cleaning, wire brushing & painting, also want to free the underbody of any rust/dirt & then re-underseal it all.

That should be a nice bit of kit when it's done. Keep it up. I've got some Fiesta RS Turbo bit's in the garage from when I was planing to turbocharge my Zetec conversion but it looks like you already have the parts I've collected.

Well it's been a while since my last post, it's been to cold to do anything in the backyard, but for the past week i've managed to strip the engine & gearbox out,

and started to strip the injection wiring from the loom, also removed the damaged drivers side wing to find a bit of rot and a load of cowboy style welding, the picture isn't very clear but the metal plates can just be pulled off.

So i'll be putting this right in the next few days, also need to buy a new front as this one is completely rotten.

The rest of the body is in top condition, i recon one of the owners must have garaged it for a big chunk of it's life, because theres not a spot of rust/rot on the panels, the under body looks pretty good too (from what i've seen of it so far) the sill's have a little bit of surface rust & theres probably some rot under the passenger side wing but thats about it so far.

The plan for it is to fit an EFI Turbo engine, replace all bushes, brake pipes ect, restore and repaint everything, put some recaro front seats in and get them recovered in black & red (red inserts) and i mite put series 1 bodykit on it.

Gavin.

Well after a few hours of scratching my head over Fiesta & Escort wiring diagrams, i got the EFI power loom installed, thats all relays & fuses,
i also managed to fit the relays in the fuse box, which just keeps things a little neater.
It took me a couple of weeks to get it fully installed and it got a bit annoying at times, but it had to be done right.

As far as wiring go's, just got to fix up the lighting & charging wires, theres alot of broken & bodge job wiring to fix & i've got a few damaged lighting plugs to put right.

Also been degreasing the engine bay, which has taken me 3 days so far, i could have done with a steam cleaner really, but done it now!

You can't beat a good old session of pooring over wiring diagrams!

I'm watching this with interest.

Thanks for the comments everyone, i've got another small update for you all

Finished the engine bay loom!!!

I went over every wire three times checking for brakes or past bodge jobs (& found quite a few), soldered all the bad areas & taped the whole thing up, just left with starting & cooling wires to put right (multi-plugs are f**ked)

Look, new wing Not fitted it yet, just dropped in place.

Also modded & mounted a XR2i sensor plate to the heater box with the ignition & map sensor in place.

Next thing to do is buy a new front panel & start welding.

Coming along nicely. I know all too well what you mean with regards to bodged and damaged looms. One favourite is shody (and quite often passed of as professional) Alarm installs. I bought a secondhand but 'mint condition' loom from an Orion 1.6 efi for my mk3 and discovered later whilst inspecting it that someone had wound the end of a self tapping screw right through one of the shielded ignition signal wires!

yeah, i had one of those alarm installs, it made a real mess of the loom, also found a couple of self tappers in the loom too.

Moondust Crust, no mate, not mine. Though I am tempted to have a look at the mag now.

Click on the link in my sig and if you scroll down the page a bit you'll see a fair bit of info on it in there. It's undergoing a slight power tweek at the moment.

another update for you all, cut all the bad repairs out of the inner wing, welded them up properly then treated the rust and sealed the weld, also managed to get the new front welded on.

I've got an engine for it now, i was going to build a CVH Turbo but then i bought a 1.8 Zetec for £50, so i'm going to build a turbocharged zetec engine.

It was out of a Mondeo so i have to change the oil & water pump, sump & pick up pipe for ones off an escort, also picked up the inlet manifold off an escort zetec which i'm modding to take the FRST management set up.

Started polishing the rocker cover.
Also bought a ERST stage 2 exhaust off a friend, i thought it was going to be like a normal exhaust (comes in 3 pieces) but it wasn't, it's just 1 big pipe with a 3" bore and the backbox looks twice the size of a standard S.S one

It was a good job i went in my dads pick-up to collect it, and it didn't even fit in that, i had to tie the down pipe section to the roof bar & could see the turbo end through the windscreen, but it should do the trick and make the car sound like a monster!

Small update,

Got all the front panels welded on,

even put the headlights ect on, just to see how it's going to look.

also welded up the door and boot locks.

Because i delocked the boot i had to make a boot release, so i went down the scrap yard and got a release motor out of a mk 5 escort.
I modded the original cabriolet boot lock (cut the push button bit off & drilled a hole in the release switch) pushed the bar through & welded too stopers on with an inch of play in the middle, the reason for this is the boot lock is very sensitive & the lightest knock will open the boot, so it needed a little bit of play, heres a few pictures of the finished piece.

I used the release solenoid from a mk3 escort pasenger door for my boot lock. I also kept the original lock fitted aswell though just incase of any alarm system problems or flat batterys.

I'll dig out a pic of it some time.

Cool, post a pic of it.
Have you ever fitted central locking? I'm on that job next & i'm not sure if i should use one of those DIY kits or a system out of a XR3i/ERST.

Yep, used the mk4 Escort system. Means you can have remote central locking. The mk3 system relies on you manualy locking the drivers door which doesn't actualy have an actuator on it. It just acts as a switch (if I remember rightly).

You will also need all the wiring as it has it's own seperate (and simple) loom.

I take it the MK4 system has it's own relays in the loom?

I don't think it used any relays. It just has one plug in to the main loom (which I think is also present in the mk3 loom, testing the old grey matter now) for power and that's it. The motors in the actuators arent very big, they only have to move a small lever on the lock mechanism.

Well it's been a while, i haven't had much time or money over the winter period, so my project got pushed to one side.
but it's not all bad, since my last update i've managed to finish most of the body work, respray the car & got hold of a series 1 anti roll bar.

part painted atm, just finished sandblasting the tie bars.
it was in bits when i got it, so had to guess how it went together, can anyone tell me if i've got the center bar the right way around?

a few pic's of the body work, it's not the original colour, it's actually a colour used on the old rover mini's.

looks lighter than it actually is in these pic's.

i've got a gearbox for the car now (bloody things are hard to find) so i'll have pic's of the 1.8 ztc engine being fitted, in the next update, which will be in a few weeks.
