They just look really high, I have a couple of customers cars like that and I always end up either kicking the steering wheel or indicator stalk when trying to get out.
I do like this project though, I had been thinking of something similar but using a much older body... Something like a Firenza or Viva estate. |

I'll be ok with the door bars as I am very flexible, lol. A couple of people off here will vouch for that after seeing me with both legs round my head, lol!
Will be a bit of a tight squeeze to get in and out once the choice of seats are in situ, but I should manage.

Are you shortening the prop or are you lucky enough that it's the right length in the MK6?

Sorry guys, been up against it the past couple of months with one thing and an another, but things are still happening!
I've got some pictures from this week to upload, but at the moment I'm on my work PC and don't have a way of getting them on, and my internet is down at home at the moment, so will have to upload them there tonight, stick them on a flash drive and upload them here tomorrow. Basically, the status at them moment is the new engine is in position for the first time for the purpose of trial fitting as obviously I don't want to get the engine bay etc all painted up and then find out later down the line I've got a load of cutting and pissing about to do! The engine drops in nicely, but there are a few clearance issues with the radiator and intercooler up front. The radiator itself is fine, but the fans are too close to fouling other things. I think the radiator mounting point must have been slightly further forward on the new age Subarus are they have pointier nose cones, whereas the classic shape models were flat fronted, and that just makes the inch difference that's playing me up at the moment. Once that's sorted, it'll just need a little more fabrication up front to make sure everything looks as if it was meant to be there, and I've got a front member from an 06-plate Impreza to sit between radiator and intercooler for a bit of extra front protection then it should be ready for paint. Pics to follow shortly...

Oh and the propshaft from to donor car was perfect length. The new one maybe slightly different as it's from a much later car. (Everything is going to be STi Version 10 Spec, so 2007 model), but hopefully shouldn't cause toooooo much of a headache.

whats the front bumper clearance like with that scooby cross member?

It's damn near perfect as it stands. But with the fans fouling a couple of bits and pieces, the radiator might need moving forward a few mill.
It shouldn't be far out to be honest. I always expected to have to cut away part of the bumper and fingers crossed it's not as much as I thought. If the worst comes to the worst, it could just mean fabricating a slimmer member, although I hope I can use the Scooby item as it really fits nicely between the rad and intercooler and looks like it was meant for the job. Well, it was really, lol, but you know what I mean!

I haven't worked out exactly how it's going to be mounted either yet, lol. Something will need fabricating. I'm looking to keep it simple though, and fix it with a pair of Aerocatch pins, which will also mean the front end can be taken apart in seconds for easy access. But in terms of physical clearance, it's not as bad as it looks.

I made the 14 hour round trip to Kent on friday (it's usually 6-7 hours, but snow, closed motorways, accidents and driving a pretty slow truck dragged it out looooooads) to collect quite a haul of parts from a salvage 8000-mile 2007 Hawkeye STi Prodrive.
Gearbox (6 speed with DCCD) Rear Diff Propshaft Driveshafts Hubs Subframes Suspension arms etc I took the lot as it was up for a bargain price, but a couple of parts will need replacing as it was a Cat. B write off after being hit pretty hard up the rear, so a couple of the parts from the rear are damaged. Effectively though, I know have all the running gear from the top spec, last of the line of the saloon STi's, which are proven good for big power. Plus it means I'll have a wider track by probably a good two inches, which will help fill out those arches, plus I should be able to run up to ten inch wide wheels with ease. Just want to get the quick steering rack from an late import STi and that side of things should be catered for! Getting the gearbox bolted in this week so I can get the engine sitting at just the right angle to crack on with the fab! Pics to follow soon.

And I only paid Ł1550 for that little haul of parts! And I found it after one last search before I was about to bite the bullet and pay Ł3250 + VAT just for the 'box, prop and diff from a well-known Impreza breaker. Bargain!

Proper bargain that, im starting to love this car more with every update, although I must admit I keep asking "whats the point, why not just use a subaru shell" TBH!
But it would be a boring world if we all wanted the same thing!

Hopefully a few more people will think the same shortly with the next few updates. It will be a proper spec of car when it's finished, I'll guarantee that.
It would have been a hell of a lot easier to use a Subaru shell no doubt, but that was never the aim. I wanted to give this car the full treatment and wanted 4wd. Original intention was Zetec Turbo and 4x4 Mondeo gear, but that's piss weak. Considered going the Cosworth route, but like you say, decent 4x4 transmission is ŁŁŁŁŁ and whilst big power is easy, getting it down on tarmac seems to be the Cosworth's achilles heel. The design is getting on in years now after all... Then I thought about the possibility of using Evo transmission with a Zetec Turbo. But then it's so many custom parts that would need making every time they broke in the future. At least going the full Subaru route, once it's all in and running, the vast majority of parts that may fail in the future should be straight swaps.

Thank you very much my friend, that's high praise coming from yourself!
The fettling and tweaking up front is 80% completed. Will hopefully get some pics up tomorrow if I get chance. Will be done by the weekend. Then it's time to whip everything back out again ready for paint, and then start putting it all back in again for real this time! Getting there.

A few new pics as promised.
The front bumper fits with minimal trimming to the top, which you won't really be able to see from the outside. Still needs a little minor fettling to make perfect. also may need a row of circular holes across the main bumper member to allow more air in to the intercooler. Needs a bit more pipework doing, and a bit more general tidying up in the engine bay, particularly the bulkhead needs some holes filling. Only really needs one hole for the loom left, all the holes for the heater plumbing won't be needed, and nor will the holes and brackets for the clutch master cylinder, brake servo etc, so will just smooth it over. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
