Rear brakes stripped, blasted and bits replated. Different level of quality from the last lot i had plated. Think i might have to get the first lot redone by this guy. Get some paint on them tonight.

few updates

rear brakes back together

Engines home. Planned on just doing a little refresh, strip and re-paint / plate some parts, but in true cossie fashion, never than straight forward. Stem seals leaking on the exhaust side so heads coming off. Bit of paint turned into top end rebuild FFS.

on a brighter note, the Cam cover cleaned up ok.

Well the valve seals were shagged but so were the guides as well. so the heads been sent off for replacement guides and a snapped stud replaced. On the plus side it has plenty of meat left on it, no measurements below 139mm.

Bottom end was a different story. obviously had a refresh at some point recently. not put together very well though , and loads of shite in the sump for the pump to suck up and ruin the bearings pump. again by a stroke of luck, the crank survived only needing a light polish, and is still on standard big and main bearings. its recently had new 0.5 oversized Mahle pistons as well, and the bores are still showing hone marks so cant have been done long ago. so looks like the engine is getting a full build as well.
Should have the head and block back in a week or two, readly to reasemble.

was put back onto a new bottom end build like that by someone loads of nice pieces of wire wool, old gasket and general gunk, finished off with a new oil pump and the oil pump bolts tightened on with a chisel and hammer because the torx bolds were stripped. was obviously too difficult for someone to fit new bolts oh and plenty of the usual kitchen / bathroom silicone sealant in place of proper gaskets.

got to love the way people treat their pride and joy

Do you's think the pump has seen a bit of debris?

Still on the hunt for a new oil pump. does anyone have any ideas which 4x4 ones are the best to go for?

Again some great work mate. It's gonna look better than new.

Keep this up.

Good choice replacing the oil cap for a original one.

Just give them a good hard tap on a flat hard wood surface and they pop out. cleaned them out with carb cleaner, pull the the centre apart and do the same, regrease and pop back together. submerge in a bowl of fresh oil and pump them until they fill with oil. job done.

Yeah, avoided the "cosworth tax" and found a local sierra breaking as they are the same as far as i can tell.

Default update

Little update. Its been niggling me that one of the cam cap nuts wouldnt torque down 100% so decided to pull the cam cover off and retap the hole on that cap. used a time-sert install rather than helicoil.

ordered a replacement front Diff as i wasnt happy with the play in mine. Thanks to Parcelforce dropping the replacement and cracking the bearing carrier, I am having to use the carrier off my old one. so while its apart, decided on a new bearing and seal kit. just waiting for the delivery of some genuine SKF ones that have been a bit difficult to source.

shell is coming along. last bit of welding getting done this week. due to someone welding a plate over rot, we ended up chopping back to good metal on the rear corner sills, and welding in fresh plates. by the time the outer sill and arch is added, seam sealer applied and painted, should look spot on.

The front diffs on saph cossies are adjustable to take up the play. I only found this after changing mine because of play and I decided to have a look at the old one on the bench one day when I was bored and found its adjustable to take up the play 😭😭

yeah, all diffs are adjustable for setting the backlash. the play in mine is in the planet gears, you can re-shim them, but shims seem to be hard to get hold of.

More work done on the body. wheel well and surrounding metal covered with stone gaurd. the other areas that have been cleaned back / replaced have been covered with Indasa Spray sealant with the optional factory finish gun.

Puts a mint standard finish on the car. Cant wait to see it painted at the end of the week.

Default underside painted

little update.

new ford alternator, drive belt and tensioner fitted

Finally the underside has been painted. decided to try and get as near to the original colour as possible. looking through hundres of colour chips and this was the closest.

Once the paint had been applied, the sides and rear wheel well have all been dusted back in black as per the factory paint.

The calipers look really nice. Are they painted or zinc plated?
