Very nice. It's good to see you going to town on the shell. Do it once and do it right, definitely the best way.

Are you going to be fitting a 1400 16v engine into it, or keeping the 1300 for now? What gearbox will you be using?

Rear discs should be ok if you're fitting a bias pedal box, as you can tweak the cylinder sizes to get the bias right.

Very much looking forward to seeing this progress. Should put up a thread about my rally cars really.

Cheers mate, it's got to last me a long time so like you say may as well do it properly.

It's going to be 1400 16v, I bought the base engine the other week. To start with it wont be anything too wild (just something to get used to forestry and more power) so hoping for maybe 140bhp to start with. After that will just upgrade it gradually and should be able to have maybe 180+ from it. Gearbox wise we're thinking Quaife H Pattern Dog box, have you ever used anything from quaife and had any issues etc?

Cheers

I'm sure it will be good fun, even with a basic 1400 it should go well enough to have a lot of fun with.

I don't have much experience with Quaife parts. My car has a Quaife diff and they're ok, but I do hear bad things about the gear kits. I've heard that since Quaife junior took over, corners got cut and the quality dropped a lot, but I couldn't really be sure about that. I'm not sure what other options there are for the IB5 box. You can go cheap-ish and combine ratios and use an RS Turbo LSD. Hewland did a short final drive for the standard box, that I THINK Chris Birkbeck might still sell.

Actually, thinking on it further, the Puma 1.4 kit car used a dog box I think. It might be worth asking Birkbeck about those, I have a feeling they were a Hewland unit. He was the official stockist for Puma rally parts so some of the 1400 stuff might be useful if he can get it, and he did sell some Ka rally parts too, including the Ford Racing arches etc etc.

Wow, its truly is a credit to you lad. Well done, great to see you getting you're teeth into such a huge job. Great to read from start to finish too.

Cage is just amazing, fab work looks fantastic and the overall design of the tubing and braces is brilliant. Avoid OBP, especially on a car likie this. Stick with Tilton or AP.

Just trying to get my 600 series Tilton one plumbed in. Havent got much space on mymk4 escort lol.

Keep the updates coming Good luck with the racing

Thanks mate, all credit for the cage etc goes to LRS Motorsport Fabrications.

Got the car back yesterday so this afternoon I started getting it rolling on standard bits just so I can move it round the garage easier. Still quite a bit to do with the shell, seat rails, new strut tops etc etc, but it will keep us busy!

A few pictures

That's the way to do it. White interiors look the bollocks. They're a pain in the arse, because they look dirty instantly, but they're still the dogs bollocks

Need to get the KA ready for next year so better crack on.

Blanking off holes for LHD conversion

Trip to Demon Tweeks on Saturday to pick up seats, steering wheel & boss, and a Tilton floor mount pedal box!

Cheers

Don't listen to what people said about the disc brake conversions. Clamping power on drums and disks will be very similar (in fact for a long time Drums were better) but disk brakes aid in cooling and therefor the fade will be less. Since you are putting in a true pedal box it will be no issue to dial in the front to rear braking.

Car looks great by the way!!!

Default Progress

So some progress at last. Shell almost ready for paint

Anyway some pictures:
Quaife dog engagement gear kit arrived

Seat rails welded in

Pedal box adjustable mount

Fuel compartment...

Ready for fuel tank & twin pumps to sit inside it...

And for the filler

Modified wheel arches so there is clearance to fit 15 inch wheels on forest tyres

I think that's everything. Jobs left for the shell are:
- make WRC style steering column (using corsa EPAS)
- engine & gearbox mounts
- gear tower for cable conversion
- handbrake mount

Also in the process of starting the work on the engine.

Cheers
Tommi
