Default ZVH Nightmare

Hello everyone,

Long story short a while ago I bought a mk4 escort with a ZVH turbo conversion. It turned out the muppet that did the conversion had bodged it in a big way, there was one felpro gasket then a metal spacer plate between the head and bottom end, the spacer plate wasnt even flat as a result the engine produced more mayonnaise than a Helmans factory.

Since then the car has been at a friends garage, he has worked out the correct compression ratio, skimmed the head and put another felpro multi layer gasket on, one made for the ZVh conversion. But the bloody thing is now burning oil.

He has very little to do with modified fords. (He's a mini man) and we have both trawled the internet looking for answers, problem is there are 673 different opinions on the matter so it's hard to tell the truth from the bull S**t.

So I guess I have a few questions...

Firstly: What have we done wrong? Is there an oil hole somewhere we should fill, if so, whats the best way to do it?

Secondly: Im getting a bit sick of all the bother i'm having with this ZVH malarky, It sounds like a bad idea from the start. (Like I said I've given you the short version of the problems I've been having) Would it be better to just stick the proper CVH bottom end back on? Or alternatively how much of a chew would it be to put a 2litre zetec head on?

Cheers in advance guys, thanks for reading, hope you can help.

I've just read in a previous post that there were oil drains on the Zetec that should have been brass plugged. So that answers the first question. How does that work then do they just knock in or do they get welded?

Still the second question stands, would I be better sacking it all and just getting a CVH bottom end?

Ha, Cheers for that. Easier said than done though and budget is an issue.

I've got a fiesta turbo bottom end for sale if you're interested. Bores have very light wear but it's all there.

I'm pretty sure now that its the engine, Oil drain holes not been plugged on the Zetec. See my reply to the original post.
