Mk2 Cortina First Car!
So i've been floating around these forum's for a while now and thought i might as well get my car on here to give me motivation to actually work on it..
Right, I'm 15 and from the very North of Scotland. Literally the very top. You go any further, you fall off.
I have a 1970 Mk2 Cortina 1600e in need of a big restoration.
So... We pulled it put of the field after sitting in my uncle's friends farm and thats where the journey starts.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Good job you don't need to drive it for a couple of years.
Is that all you have or do you have glass interior lights and all the other missing parts etc?

Got a lot of parts, doors, bonnet, bootlid, glass, some interior and planning on putting an Essex in it. Although I've got all the Mk2 Capri 3.0 running gear. Needs to be done early 2016 haha!

So after it was pulled out, i had to make some form of way to transport it rather than using a trailer because the trailer was not ours.. So I made this -

IMG_1239 by ryancameron01, on Flickr
The car was then taken to a friend's garage to use his sandblaster. So I sandblasted the whole thing and slapped some primer on there.

So we took it back and put all the doors, bonnet and boot lid and lined it all up before we start cutting all the shit out and replacing a lot.

Then, we stripped all the doors etc off after being aligned, hooked an endless chain to the roof (lazy man's way of lifting it without a hydraulic jack) and put her up on the jig!

Spit was modified by me to lower it so that the car could actually rotate in the garage lol.

We then went out to a friend's 'house' / workplace and found an old shitty rotting unrestorable capri and cut 6 feet of the front so that we could use the chassis legs for my cortina. So, we're cutting the chassis legs off my cortina and putting capri ones in... Bigger engine.

By the way in the background of that photo ^^ thats my dad's custom cab transit, turned from a tipper into a articulated truck
Pulls a 32 foot long trailer that is also homemade and kitted out with caravan interior from a wrecked caravan. Driven a couple of times from Caithness all the way down to Goodwood (around 17 hours) and never missed a beat
Not that long ago i then stuck the mk2 capri 3.0 axle on the car with some capri pepperpots and im seeing a problem with the width

What I was also thinking of doing was widening the wings (not the arches) and making them the same length at front and back but kind of bubbled in the middle of the wing. Will get some pictures up to show but yeah thanks!

My V6 Cortina II, that I built back in 1978, had a Capri 3.0 axle and gearbox. Didn't have any width issues but I did have to flatten up the arch inner lip. Gearbox needed the tunnel cutting of course and a cable clutch and a Zodiac rev counter to count the extra cylinders. A Mk 1 Granada rad was squeezed in and worked fine with an electric fan and I had a Holly 4-barrel on a custom built manifold - there was a chap in Kent making them back then as well as the two 3-branch exhausts by a chap down near Brands Hatch that I cant recall now.
Best time at Santa Pod was 16.00.
By today's standards it wasn't amazing but all built in the street (and then a lockup) with a 100yd extension, including welding and spraying. The old Rover and blue Mk2 were mine also and I also bought and sold the Austin A70 Hereford you can see in teh 3rd pic. It was running, part restored and came with a warehouse full of NOS Austin parts, mostly chrome trim. Think I paid Ł300 and sold it for Ł400 - a lot in those days. I sold the V6 in about 1982 for around Ł850 I think. Still the top of my list of my previously owned cars I wish I could have back.

Trying to find one is proving difficult, and they're quite expensive! Well not fit for a budget of a 15 year old who's been saving for some time haha.

> Awesome car! What width wheels did you have on it and was it the standard axle? Car would be worth a lot today anyway, nice build! Is that the capri double headlights too?
Axle was a Mk2 3.0l Capri I think. Might have been Mk1, standard diff (3.55?) and brakes. The wheels were 6.5" I think with 185/70's (forgive my memory, it was 35 years ago). The headlights where from a Vauxhall...Ventura I think, with the Cortina grill trimmed to fit and Escort Mk2 indicators cut into the original bumper. Paint was Ford Diamond White with a tan vinyl roof - matching the fashions of the day and was an option on the Mk2 Capri's and Mk4 Cortina's at the time.
Springs were uprated/lowered at the front and lowering blocks under standard springs at the rear with Spax all round. Brakes were standard but with a servo.
Steering was original and a bit of a weakpoint. The box chewed itself when parking one night at the flicks. Had to go to the breakers next day, extract another for a fiver and then, in the street, mount it to my car to get home.
BTW - propshaft was two-piece, really easy, 2.0l Cortina front half spliced to a 3.0l rear half with suitable mounted welded in the tunnel. Perfect length.

Servo from a capri im assuming, something like this IMG_1824 by ryancameron01, on Flickr
Yeah i'm fitting the capri 3.0 axle up front aswell, so will have the rack and pinion steering!
Was thinking if the propshaft was going to fit or not, so is the 2.0 half shorter?

> Was thinking if the propshaft was going to fit or not, so is the 2.0 half shorter?
I think the Cortina Mk4 was longer than the Capri prop (which was too short) - hence the pick n mix as they share the same type of centre connection/bearing. All easy to do 35 years ago when such things were abundant in breakers.
Think I still have a Cortina boot badge somewhere and know I have the '5-speed' wood and brushed ally gear knob (but the box was only 4-speed) as it hangs proudly on the wall in my garage - I swapped back to the original Cortina one when I sold the car.
Here's another snap (sorry, feel like I've gatecrashed your party) of the engine (Stage 1) coming out of a Corsair, you can just see the Cortina at the rear waiting to receive it.
The other pic is me with my V6 Pop at Olympia Customer Car show in 1981. Also built using lots of Capri V6 parts including bulkhead & tunnel, engine and manual box, pedal box and servo etc. And also with Holly carb, alloy rocker covers, and the rest. Built after the Cortina, in a lock-up and welded, sanded & sprayed in the open (to the annoyance of my neighbours).

Got the original bootbadge for this thing upstairs in the garage! Would love a savage gearknob for the cortina but my luck in finding one will be very VERY slim. But we'll see.
Feel free to gatecrash some more, i love looking at old photos and hearing about old stories, especially when they involve classic fords!! That engine looks awesome, especially the polished rocker covers!
Love the Pop! Lovely colour too! A guy from up here has a completely standard restored pop, beautiful car. (he also just restored a Capri 3.1RS )
Some awesome builds you did, you got any classic fords now? Definitely reminds me of my dad's pictures and stories, custom built capri's and escort mexico's!
