jammerrs - focus st170
hi everyone, just bought myself a black 03 plate focus st170 3 door. will get pics up as soon as possible.
its my second car and my first ford
as soon as i get my hands on it, it will be getting the wheels/some other wheels refurbed as these let the car down. a full on bufty session and every fluid on the car plus spark plugs etc will be changed
mods wise it will be a case of improving on the original for now.
i am looking for gaz coilovers, a de cat, K&n 57i or typhoon (is there much difference?) induction kit, milltek exhaust, possibly a better head unit that is ipod compatible and maybe a thule roof rack for carrying my bike on.
of course there will be other little changes along the way but they are the main ones i have planned

wow. im a bit overdue with the up date!
getting full time at work as well as other commitments really has limited my free time
Couple of notes to self here for future reference -
towing eye thread is 16x3 left hand thread
st170 wheels weigh 9kgs
to add a new key,
insert key into ignition,
turn from position 1 to 2 and back to 1 4 times,
car should beep,
take key out press new fobs.
for 1 touch windows
switch ignition on
press and hold window switch to fully close window and continue to hold close for at least 1 second
release switch
press window close switch 3 times for at least a secong
press and hold window switch to fully open window, continue to hold for 1 secong
release switch
fully press and release window close switch
ensure window closes fully
fully press and release open switch
ensure windows open fully
repeat for remaining windows/ sunroof
once this is done you can use the 'global windows opening' hold unlock to open windows and lock to close windows
anyway couple of pictures from when i got it
at this point only mods were k&n and the cd player

not a bad car just stupid running costs destroy a better following for these also shame ford overated them so much on the hp front as on average they are all 155hp, and you really need some sort of heat sheild on that K&n with as much cold air ducting as you can find or it will drink even more fuel

always wanted a seat belt cutter combined with the glass hammer but this turned up for free
taken to reading to. some great things in these books and has given me a couple of ideas
wrapped my decat in exhaust wrap. still need to finish it though
couple of pictures whilst washing it
can see just how well the milted fits here to
and a few of it all clean

I've just bought some more alloys for this, originals but in black.
so now i have a problem.
eventually (christmas time) one set will be powder coated silver.
do i just send the black ones in for painting or do i fit the black ones and get the silver ones redone?
pics to follow

Used to love my old st170. Had a k&n, tdci rear exhaust pipe with a 3" inward rolled tip on it, lowered 30mm and powder coated red wheels. Very well handling car just underpowered especially for the fuel they use!!! Tax also put me off keeping it but I did like it. A lot of car for not a lot of money.
Yours is looking good. I'd go for us rear lights, always wanted some on mine

well she has just rolled over onto 110,000 miles
so as her treat she has just had fresh oil and filter - first time doing it myself and i spilt the old stuff all over the drive
i also roped a couple of friends in to help me paint up my wheels, had two new tyres fitted - toyo t1r 215/45/r17's again, fixed my reversing light and gave it a full clean inside and out
all in all she's brilliant and i still love her

112,500 miles and ebc green stuff pads fitted, new pagid discs, halfords dot 4 racing fluid (330* dry boiling point)
discs and pads were fitted on the front when the rears wear they'll get the same treatment. centre of the discs were painted to hopefully prevent rusty disc syndrome.
calipers will be repainted soon.
on the bad note the drive shaft is split on the drive side to that'll get sorted as soon as it arrives and its mot day tomorrow

she passed her mot
couple of adversaries,
rear damper misting oil - going to whip this off today and send it back off to gas under warranty.
the cv joint - had that done at the garage already
rear brake discs pitted - these will be getting the same treatment as the fronts today, ebb green stuff pads and painted paged discs.
chip in the windscreen - neither here nor there really
engine management light on because of the cat, but it passed on emissions
all in all very happy

115k today
so .denso iridiums have been fitted along with fresh oil and a new filter.
heat shields have been reattached at the back and on the manifold, little bit of coolant added, like 100ml, just like it to be on max when i service it, drop of brake fluid, screen wash topped up. knocked up a cover for the engine mount bolt that sits under the k&n to stop the gauze becoming damaged.
just of to the petrol station now to fill her up with shell as usual, check the tyre pressures then bring it back for a good wash

115,080 miles and my cat has broken into 2 pieces, so brand new cat and flexi have been fitted from bm catalysts at a cost of Ł159.98.
I've also used all the same size bolts to make it easier for myself or the next person, unlike the last person who did something with it

Just found a lovely mod on the st170 Facebook group to rid the throttle pedal of its slack.
A tie wrap onto the cable that goes to the pedal, this makes they pedal higher and far more responsive - perfect

Treated her to new front top mounts, front drop links and rear drop links to.
Not too hard of a job, and with having coilovers on I just wound down the spring and that meant I could remove the top mount without removing the strut.

Just checked the irmc is working as it should as it occasionally throws up a engine code for it but physically looks like its working great.
Felt obliged to clean the air filter while it was off. Very strange how K&N's are white while they're clean and its the oil that makes them red. Also 15+ year old K&N oil still works a treat I would of been in nappies when my dad bought it

I would say its a little more responsive at high revs on and off the throttle.
Although the biggest difference is with the windows down listening to it.
The bracket has taken some modifying to fit properly.
The biggest single problem nobody has mentioned is that it says k&n upside down. To me this is just not right.
So if i was to do it again - I'd fit a breather system seperate to the air filter as I now have done. Fab up a bit of a bracket which I've basically done. And just buy a round cone filter of your choice. For me a good toss up between k&n and pipercross.
