Default Rs s1 HELP I think it may be a ringer!

Hello everybody, I have just joined and this is my first question. I purchased an s1 a few years ago with intentions of a nut and bolt resto. I have eventually got round to stripping it bare but a few things just arn't right. Before I bury my hat in this I need to make sure I have the correct shell preferably the original would be nice. I know these quite well I think but as I have stripped the car I have notices it has had the roof skin changed at some point, didn't bother me to much as a good job, inner wing have been changed as well?? Me thinks a white pre 84 shell converted, it has rear roll bar long roof rails?. Does anybody know of any other tell tail areas, bulkhead etc something hard to change. it has a floor number but can't make out any letters even after paint stripperingthe paint off.Any guidance would be much appreciated. It Is a b reg custom by the way. The car is on the hpi register and may have had more hits than the Beatles but was not a real Rs without a bit of history. LOL!
Cheers

a sure way is to check the ecu monting points
Behind the heater matrix box is the ECU. The fixings for this are unique to the S1 – the ECU screw-inserts are braized onto the bulkhead and are a gold colour, the same as the wing-to-scuttle panel. *note: if the ECU is fitted you will not be able to see this.

Does the chassis number stamped on the floor match the vin plate? Is there any sign of tampering on the floor?

Thanks for your replays, the chassis number is there but I can't make out any of the numbers at all, there is lots of surface rust as must have been holding water when stored. Will have a look at the ecu mounts for the captive nuts cheers. Many thanks. I have done some research and apparently the gearstick mounts are different and the rear seat mounts are different????? Don't know about them as I have checked and they look the same as my bro's mk4 any more suggestions ;(

If it's on the hpi maybe the roof was the repair? Or is it recorded stolen?

It has mk4 type strut tops but it looks like they have had work which is why I suspected an older shell especially when I can see it's had a roof skin. This work with no previous welding that I can see on the shell makes me sus? Don't get me wrong would make a good solid car but?? Was wanting to build something really nice even tho listed. So are there any other ways to tell if it was a pre 84 shell? Then I can make a decision in what I do or how much I spend in it?
Cheers guys

The front panel should have a cut out for the fan, it does look as though it’s had a bit just chopped out but that’s how it came from Ford. The grill should have black on the top and side edges – looking like it has been masked off, so if the grill is completely white it has been sprayed.

The front bumper is unique to the S1. It has longer studs and a spacer washer to push the bumper out more because of the arch extensions. Due to this the spot-light brackets are longer than non-S1 versions. The bumper plastics are also unique to the car as they are white plastic and not sprayed white.

the anti roll bar assembly which is different to S2 and normal Escort. There are two big cast pieces in the corners and there is a square box section piece behind the front bar. There are also clamps on the back of the assembly towards the wheels

The aperture for the rear opening 1/4 windows is also original to the S1 over the base Mk3 models. The S1 has holes for the hinges and locking clasps. Other mk3 models did not have these and will have been drilled into the shell - again you will only tell if this is stripped down

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply. The car is fitted with s1 anti roll bar and has rear opening quarter windows, no spots fitted but I have purchased a mint set of carello 640's and brackets but now you say am not sure if they are s1 brackets, they are 81ag-15270-aa. Will need to check unless any knows if they are correct. If I can remember the window breakers where just screwed into the frame (b post) not sure if that's correct. If not then is not the real deal the front grill is all white with no black but not end of the world as prob had a slap or smudged lipstick at some point I would have thought cheers
